I am wondering what would be a good upgrade for the brakes on my '91 RS. I know the rotors will need replacing this summer so I was thinking of replacing the rotors, pads, lines and possibly the calipers. Also I was thinking along the lines of other honda/acura cars like using gs-r or civic si parts. I would really like to use type-r parts but I don’t think any of them are interchangable with our tegs unless you do an entire suspension swap and switch over to 5 lugs which is something I don’t want to do.
So what cars would be an upgrade for my brakes? Maybe even a G3 LS would have better components; I don’t know.
Also, would it be a good idea to upgrade the brake master cylinder as well or would it not make much of a difference? TIA
Here is a decent thread, that got pushed off the board because the members here would rather talk about other sh*t.
I would leave the master cylinder alone unless it is leaking. I also suggest that you wait before you upgrade the calipers. If you change out the rotors, pads, and lines then you may have all the braking power that you’ll ever need/want.
If you are locking up the wheels then you don’t need more stopping power.
I also don’t think that a G3 or Si’s brakes are any better than a DAs. In fact, look in the back of a Car and Driver and the Si has the longest distance of any car (from 60).
There will be no benefit to using GS-R or Si brake components nor will using a new OEM mc/booster or prop. valve (unless your stock components are failing).
Look towards aftermarket big brake kits or if you have the money, itr 5 lug conversion. Battlecat and myself are working on a write-up to PROPERLY do this conversion (aside from us, if anyone else has done the conversion, you’re welcome to add your input to the write-up).
Our tegs already have good brake calipers on them Nissin is a damn good company…they make the calipers on most sport bikes as well, and if they can stop a bike doin 160mph then i think ill trust them to stop me at 130mph…So far i have only upgraded my rotors and pads, Power slot slotted rotors and ebc brake pads…im gonna do the goodridge steal braided brake lines soon though…
Oh and BTW i would only recommend the big brake upgrade if you never ever plan to use your stocks again

Does he still post here? Also, how much would the parts (alone) be for the ITR swap?
Jeff-
How do you like those EBC’s? I’ve been thinking of getting them but everyone has mixed opinions on them. I’d like to see some G2ICer’s feedback on them. Lemme know how you like them.

It seems so strange that even a g3 gsr wouldn’t have rotors that I would benefit from swapping on. But I guess that’s why you ask questions.
Ray~ doesn’t fastbrakes only sell used rotors and stuff like that? Also their site confuses me a little. Like the specR kit at this link: specR ; the first kit at the top of the page, is that for the rotor and the caliper or just the rotor. $75 per corner for rotors and calipers sounds like a pretty good deal if that’s what it comes with. And is that kit just for the front rotors or is it for the rear as well? Have you or anyone else bought anything from that sight?
$75 for each 11" front rotor. email him for more details, he’s a good guy. They sell a whole front brake kit with the redrilled itr rotors and itr calipers for around 300. People seem to say rear brake upgrades for our cars dont help much. people from honda-tech use it and say it’s great.
GSpeedR,
Thanks for those links.
Whitey,
You’d be very surprised what good pads will do to your brakes. I have HAWK HP+ pads in front, and they are amazing. The HP+ pads gave me much better modulation, than stock. The down side is they need a 1 or 2 stop warm up, they are loud, and you will notice your wheels are a shade darker everyday. They can handle the track too, I did a lapping day at SIR, which is known to be tough on brakes, because of elevation changes without fade. Steel Braided lines will also help improve your modulation.
Well I definitely don’t want any pads that will cause more brake dust than the ones I’ve got. I’ve already been considering powdercoating my rims a darker color or just getting darker rims because of how nasty my rims look a few days after cleaning them.
Anyway, like I mentioned I am going to need to get new rotors because mine have been turned down who knows how many times in the past so can someone at least recommend to me a good rotor/pad setup that will create less brake dust and help me out on the autocross course? I’m more into form than fashion so unless cross drilled and slotted rotors really help I don’t need to spend the extra money on that.
Ray~ so that’s $75 for each front rotor? It mentioned something about them needing accord calipers. Do I need accord calipers to use with those rotors?

EBC claims their pads don’t dust. If you go that way you’re probably sacrificing low dust for stopping power. Everyone says Brembo blanks are the best, I think JC or Summit sells them for $30 or $35 each. I used Raybestestes (sp) from Shucks for $25 each. They changed color a bit (from heat) but didn’t warp. Get some Black Slipstreams, and then your dust problem will be gone.
As said in other threads, I’m torn between the Axxis Ultimates and Hawk HP+s. It appears that Mr. Frost and mojoGSR are using the HP+s and I think that I am going to use the Axxis Ultimates.
Note: the Ultimates are considered more extreme than the HPS yet more street worthy than the HP+s. I hope that they are the compound that I’m seeking.
I’m kind of hardcore when it comes performance vs. streetability, but I don’t see any problems with using HP+s on the street. I actually prefer to the stock pads on the street. They get warm by the time I get to the end of my block. The dust and noise aren’t that bad. I would use them all year if they didn’t cost $70.
My car is pretty much street/drag, im using AEM brake pads because they give a lighter shade of brake dust so your wheels dont look as dirty and it’s a good street pad.
I heard Hawk brake pads contain iron so the brake dust is corrosive if it stays on the car, for that reason I didnt get them.

answer was right there
do the calipers need rebuilding or anything? or am I just totally off base here? I saw somewhere a posting of a rebuilding kit for our stock calipers??? inputs anyone
