Looks awesome bud. One thing I definitely suck at (moreso just lack experience and exposure) is wood-working and carpentry. My brother in-law is making an entertainment center for the main TV room here, so I’ve learned a bit from watching… But I’m much better with autobody/paint finishing heh. Maybe I’ll snap some photos if I remember.
I think that bookcase would look good with the crown-molding trimmed down, being that its in the corner. Definitely keep us updated when that happens. Again, it looks great.
Crown trim is tomorrow; went ahead and populated the shelves to get shit off the floor. :giggle:
Top shelf is mine (note the lack of an “s”); the rest are hers. My staples:
(yes, that post-processing took all of about 18 seconds, so shaddup )
Not pictured is the literary masterpiece “Jailbait Zombie” which was found at a Borders that was going out of business for seventy-five cents. Worth every penny too.
BTW, that book called “Hunter” is a self-published novel that has sold over 50k copies since it went on sale a few months ago, and about 40k of those are since Thanksgiving. It’s an AWESOME read, and if you aren’t e-reader inclined, I might could get you a personalized autographed paperback. Author’s a good friend of mine.
Great job, Mark. This is exactly why I said I wanted that saw you posted; to make furniture. We don’t really need any more, but I want a different hobby.
Looks awesome! I like that finish on it. Ends up my new neighbor has a fuck ton of tools in his garage at my disposal. They don’t do much but drink beer all day so they wont be putting it to use. Home Depot today after I finish moving into my house. I do believe it is time to start my new hobby since parts for the Lex are <jimmy mcmillan voice>too damn high</jimmy mcmillan voice>
Atta boy. This country needs more people learning to make shit themselves.
After I get some cleanup done in this room, I’ll be finishing up the cuts for the router table/cabinet. Then the rest of the day is going to be playing with liquid latex and other such products to prepare for tonight’s zombie epicness.
Well I’m all moved into the house. Been digging around to find some used tools so that I have my own stuff. Ends up my neighbors are really cool but I don’t want them to know too much about what I have in my house. Found an old table I’m going to bring back to life. On the list of tools to get: orbital sander, radial saw, table saw, clamps. I’m going to put my dremel to good use now. Pics to come when I bring it home.
Stay away from Ryobi, Craftsman (other than the “professional” line, those are good juju as is the C3 cordless stuff), and Black & Decker.
Porter-Cable (which is owned by B&D, but doesn’t YET suffer their quality woes), DeWalt, and Ridgid are all good brands to go with. Ridgid right now has my attention solely due to the lifetime service agreement. Basically you take 3 minutes, fill out the little card, and spend the major dollars on a whole stamp and mail it in. Bam. Anything EVER happens to it, fixed or replaced no questions asked.
ETA: What exactly do you mean by “radial saw”? Radial arm saw? standard circular saw? compound miter? If you’re getting a decent table saw, a good circular saw and compound miter will round out the herd. Radial arm saws are really nice to have, but way down on my list of tools to have if only because they really don’t do anything the other three can’t handle.
Just remember, the blades are far more important than the tool they go on. I know guys using cheap $40 black & decker circular saws that have no problem powering through solid 2" thick oak or cherry with the right blade.
if you’re willing to put the coin down, the ridgid model like i have (r4510) is phenomenal, plus you can still add a 3/4" wide dado stack to it. have done plenty of cutting with mine and 3/4" oak ply and 1.5" solid oak don’t seem to bog it down at all. the solid may have slowed it down just a tad, but considering it’s a “dinky” contractor-type i’m quite pleased. slightly slower feed rate and it’s smooth sailing.
if you’re looking for something a little less pricey, the Porter-Cable PCB220TS is a little over half the price of the Ridgid, not quite as many options, but still a very nice fence, decent miter gauge (which you can always upgrade later since it’s a standard-size groove, unlike many jobsite-type saws) and will still accept up to 1/2" dado stacks. Not quite the capacity of the ridgid, but still a great saw at a lower price of entry. once again, go with Freud for blades and you’ll be fine. HD sells freuds, lowe’s doesn’t. 24-tooth ripping blade is around 25-27 bucks, 60-tooth finish blade is about 30-35. both highly recommended, but if you go with only one just err on the side of smooth and get the 60-tooth. finding a blade that cuts nicer and/or lasts longer than a freud will result in almost $100 per blade. worth it, but not concerned with it till i have more room for an indoor shop and a 3-horse sawstop cabinet saw.
Lol oddly enough I’ve never owned one, despite my genetic inclination to rotary engines. Because I’m Puertorican, I am going on the cheap route having this hobby rather than cars.
Back on topic: I pick up the table tomorrow morning. Owner says it’s solid wood and heavy. It’s been painted, so I’m stripping it to see how the wood looks. Worst case scenario I clean it up and put down a color I want. Gotta put new legs on it too.
