burning oil....should i be worried?

ok…well i just got done with my es bushings about 2 weeks ago.my carwas burning alot of oil at first but now i get puffs of blue smoke if the cars has just been idling and i use the throttle.it puffs when i take off from a long red light. the thing that im curious about is why does it smoke now when it didnt before i had it up on jackstands?
under normal driving you cant smell oil but when you get on it you can. other wise it just puffs a little bit when taking off from a stand still.

try changing the oil, check your plugs for oil…it could be a number of things going on…id say your rings might be going but im sure an expert will chime in

A compression and leakdown test will tell you what you need to know.

imo… ur rings are going out, or ur leak oil into ur pistons… but do wat the guy above said… compression test it and maybe leakdown if u can find one…

If you do a compression test and get a result that’s lower than spec, then squirt some motor oil in that cylinder and re-test. If the compression goes up, then you have leakage past the rings.

If it’s not the rings, it’s likely the valve seals. It could very well be a combination of both though.

Change your oil first.

Problem persists, do a compression test and a leakdown test. Switching to 10w might help a bit also.

I don’t think that will make a difference. Changing the oil is obviously a good place to start if it needs it, but 5w30 and 10w30 have the same viscosity at operating temperature, so the effect will be nil. Changing to a 40 weight oil might reduce consumption, but 5w30 and 10w30 are essentially equivalent in summer temperatures.

I would probably be concerned. Do what they said first, but I would say your rings are on their way out. Don’t push it much longer though, it’ll just get worse. What about the level of oil itself? How much do you need to add and how often??

well i did a compression test and i was 160 across all cylenders…im not burning enough oil to even add any yet…itsbeen doin it forlike a month.the car didnt burn any oil until i had up on jackstands for a little while so i could do my energy suspension bushings.now it puffs if its been idling for a little while (at a long light for example).i checked the condition of the oil and its fine, it has a darkish amber color…im only about 800-1000mi into this oil change. im running castrol 5w40 high mileage full synthetic. theres also no noticable loss of power. the spark plugs are in perfect condition (for bosch platinums at least). im an ngk fan personally. but theres no oil on the plugs and theyre a good color.

the car has 134865mi on it. i wouldnt be suprised if it was rings or seals or both even.

im a little stumped. well im gonna start building an lsvtec outside of the car so i just hope this motor will hold out for me until then.

Investigate your PVC/EGR system. Could be sucking oily waste up and in. And, in suggesting this, I’m going to assume the smoke is exiting your exhaust pipe and not dripping from somewhere.:whisper: As we all know you’ve actually sampled this by looks and smell by having someone else reving the engine and you trying not to asphyxiate yourself. White vapor/sweet smell= coolant and bluish white/gagging burning smell w/emt’s called while convulsing on ground= oil.

haha…yea its deffinetly oil…i am dripping a little due to a mild oilpan gasket leak but thats aboot it.the thing that im curious about is that it only puffs smoke when theres enough time for oil to settle on the pistons (i assume). if it idles for a little while then i rev up im puffin blueness until its all burned up. it doesnt stall or sputter or anything else.the reason im worried is that if its the rings …im toying with the idea of lsvtec but i dunno…stumped

Valve guide and/or the seals. Don’t know the history of the engine? Some folks think that all hondas have soft valves so, when they break a belt they might tap a piston slightly, they will pull the head and peen the valve straight, but the whole action might unseat the valve guide or crack the valve seal, if its brittle. The upshot is that you might be drizzling oil thru that crevase.

im pretty sure thats the case…after a little thinking and reading i learned that since the valve seals are bad its allowing a little oil past the valves…when the car is at idle its not able to burn off the excess oil that building on the tops of the pistons…when i rev up its gets hot enough to ignite the oil thus the puff of blue smoke exiting my exhaust… im not worried… im doing lsvtec pretty soon, the head has a full skunk2 valvetrain with replaced seals …i was just concerned that it was something very substantial that would inhibit me from doing lsvtec… to all that has replied thanks for your help.
