buying type r b18c5, have a few questions

So I came across a deal on this motor and I’ve pretty much decided to buy it. It was swapped in a 94 integra rs iand was running off of what appears to be a chipped p72 obd1 ecu. How do i know if it is running on a type r base map? Pics are at the bottom of the page.

Now the car was wrecked in the front end which is why he was selling the motor. I got it started up and it ran well. . It had been sitting for about 4 months without being started. After is ran for a few minutes, I noticed a faint white smoke. It wasn’t running hot. So I went ahead and did a compression test and got great numbers. 255, 250, 245, 250. I was convinced to buy it with those numbers. The radiator was busted up from the wreck but I watched the temp gauge closely as it warmed up. Should I really have any concerns with a little faint white smoke after sitting for a few months with such good compression numbers?

Here is the ecu…

That picture of the ecu doesn’t do anyone any good. You need to get a picture of the entire board. To tell what map is on the chip, you would need a rom burner and a program to pull the info off the chip like crome.

I wouldn’t be too concerned with the white smoke. It could be because of the old gas or something. If the motor idles great, revs great, sounds great and has those numbers then go for it. I would suggest pulling the spark plugs and seeing if they are wet. Just in case you know?

^what he said.

Also, this is what a chipped and socketed p72 looks like. Look at the lower right corner. Not saying this is the ONLY way a chipped board looks like but you get the idea.

Yea like I said I know nothing about chipping ecu’s. I just happened to read something about a jumper wire and resistor in the area that I took the pic and didn’t know if that would tell you guys anything. I’ll try and get a pic of the entire board.

As for the motor, the spark plugs were old and worn out. Definitely more on the black side too. But for $1200, I couldn’t pass it up

For that price it’s hard to lose out, crazy good deal. As for the ECU, by looking at the chip you won’t know anything except for possibly what type of chip it is (generic off ebay, Crome, Hondata…etc) and if the chip happens to be an ebay one it might say what motor it’s for or something like that. But without actually getting the program off of the chip with a computer you don’t know for sure. I wouldn’t worry about it and I’d try to focus on finding out what type of chip it is. If it’s just a generic off the shelf chip then I’d just toss it, get a Crome or Hondata setup and then have it tuned. Regardless, you’re going to want to have it tuned, I wouldn’t trust it’s history. Plus the motor really should be tuned for your car with your mods.

I honestly don’t even know what chip to look at. Here are a few more pics

looks chipped to me. he is missing the zif socket though. the way it is now, you would need to use a flathead to get that chip out and getting it back in is dangerous since you can very easily damage the pins. the zif socket is a quick release thing that makes removing an installing the chip safe and easy. i suggest getting crome and burning the correct map to an SST chip listed below and be on your way.

this is a list of all the things you will NEED

I ended up taking the ecu to our local performance shop and having it chipped. He said he’s probably done 200 stock type r tunes and that they were all pretty close to identical so he threw it on that ecu for me.

ok. i suggest you gather listed items anyway. it will make things much easier for you if you intend on keeping that motor for any length of time
