Friend just got a 90 teg from his uncle, but the engine is mehh. Since his car comes with obd-0, I was wondering if its okay to swap in the cheaper obd-0 b16a engine, provided all the emissions stuff is present. Also, will it mate right up with the stock 5 speed?
use a b16 trans.
the LS trans has longer gears than the b16.
the LS trans WILL match up with the b16 no problem, but I doubt you’ll get the full potential out of the motor.

bump.
When you tell people to search, you are suppose to put up a helpful link. Otherwise you’re just being arrogant and unhelpful and shoudn’t have typed in the first place. When I searched I found the nice b16a swap guide and things about obd-1 engines. However, smog regulations in California used to be very against JDM engines. Only in the last handful of years have they allowed JDM engines, provided they are at least as new as the chassis, were meant for the same class of vehicle, and have all the smog equipment. I read a lot about people who successfully swapped in the obd-1 engine and got it BAR’ed, and I’ve seen one dude with a CRX (also came with obd-0) swap in the OBD-0 b16a in socal, but i found no info on the obd-0 engine going into an obd-0 integra. I see you are not from the west coast, so it is expected you are not familiar with California law. A polite “bump” would have been much more helpful.
Also, we were not interested in buying the tranny. We are not building a race car; we simply want something cheap and reliable. I know that b16 trannies are shorter, and that some came with an LSD, but he is kinda new to driving stick and is not planning to race anytime soon.
If you want a straight answer, call DMV and call the state ref. Simple as that.
ok well i have been looking into this for a long time i had a 90 integra with an obd-0 b16 and the only way to have it bar’ed is to convert to obd-1 and have them ref it as a delsol. what you will have to do is get a four wire o2 a obd-1 §§§§§ and a obd-0 to obd-1 jumper harness and obd-1 injectors. the hard part is getting a p30 ecu that is the only ecu that you can run to get it bar’ed other wise you can run a chipped p28. oh and you have to get a new TB one with the map sencer on the top of it. let me know if you have any questions spent a lot of time talking to the ref and to the BAR.
thanks

Cool, thanks for the answer. Yeah I read on how the obd-0 has weird oxygen sensors that you may not find replacements for here in the states. That, and any performance header you want prolly won’t mate well with that odd sensor.
Yeah an obd-1 looks like the better choice, but I went to the shop with him and his mom already authorized with a signature the removal and teardown of the old engine. Broke my heart to see my good friend milked out of $2500 before he gets his teg back. They did a compression test, found #4 cyl to have no pressure, and automatically declared a full engine rebuild for $2000. Damn sacramento shops.
