My transmission is on the verge of going out (230k and grinding) might just be my clutch, i dont know. Whats a good way to check that anyway? i have a 90 integra ls. If i plan on building my car to have around 250whp. what’s a good way to go. rebuild, jdm, swap? if price is an issue as well as reliability.
whats the difference between hydro and cable anyway? are the clutches on these transmissions interchangeable? how hard is it to swap a hydro on a previous cable tranny set up?
There is little difference between cable and hydro B-series transmissions. They are vitually the same internally. The 92+ cable trannies are near identical to the hydro trannies, and gear sets can be transferred between these two types of transmissions.
The only real difference is clutch actuation. Cable transmissions use a clutch cable to engage/disengage the clutch. Hydro transmissions use a slave cylinder and engage/disengage the clutch with hydraulic pressure. Both trannies use direct linkage to change gears, so the feel of the shifter will be the same from cable to hydro.
Personally I PREFER the cable tranny over the hydro. It is simplistic, can be adjusted with ease, and you never have to worry about replacing fluids or costly cylinders. Also, the feel of the clutch on hydro transmissions is sloppy and soft. The cable clutch makes for a stiffer and more responsive pedal feel, which to an experienced driver like myself, lets you control engagement much better.
In your situation, if you are trying to keep long gear ratios, just find another LS/RS/GS cable transmission. If you want short gears it will be more difficult. Cable B16A transmissions are near impossible to find in good condition. An easy way to get a good cable tranny with short gears is to find the case from a 92+ cable tranny and swap in new gears from a hydro B-series tranny. It will be like having a brand new transmission.
