I do realize there’s tons and tons of these threads, but I didn’t see anyone with results similar to mine (unless I missed something?). But anyways I Failed the first test at 15mph and got labeled a gross polluter. The second test at 25 mph however, I passed with low numbers and hit the max NOx limit (barely passed.)
So basically what’s done to the car thats fairly new: 02 Sensor, Spark plugs & wires, oil, K&N air filter. I’ve run seafoam 2 times (once 9 months ago, again just a month ago).
I don’t know if a new cat will help. Did that to my Supra when I had it and I still got high NOx. Any light that can be shed would be greatly appreciated.

well new cat will eliminate your HC and NOx. but sometimes it might be your car is overheating a bit and it can cause your NOx high.
Well I took a timing light to my car, and came up reading retarded by 3 degrees. i put it back to 16 degrees. I know I can’t possibly be overheating. unless my thermostat is rated high? I have no clue. What I find weird is I go through coolant relatively quick, I read at operating temperature, My radiator fan kicks in good, and I know my headgasket isn’t bad. My friend told me to change the cat. I already ordered a brand new one, and looked at my distributor cap and rotor, finding hella burn marks all over the metal parts. I’m replacing that, and then doing a test at my school.
by looking at your timing it may reduce your HC but not your NOx. Changing your cat will eliminate your NOx. I just smogged a 91 civic with a bad cat. His cat is rattling sounds like its broken in pieces inside. when i hooked it up on our smog machine the HC and NOx is sky high gross polluter and the other test passed i did changed his coolant and the NOx when down by about 20 ppm on 15miles test and went down 30 ppm on 25 miles test. but still a little high on his NOx but when he came back with a brand new cat it did eliminate his high NOx and high HC. Now his civic reads almost perfect smog. I did not open his old cat but i`ll ask my my boss if i can open to see it. I would love to show you a bad cat.
I’ve been doing a little more researching on the whole high NOx. turns out to be high temperatures in the combustion chambers. I replaced the distributor cap and rotor since the wires and plugs are almost new. Gonna still check my plugs before I go get retested. I ordered a new catalytic converter, but it turns out I ordered a NON-CALIFORNIA cat (which I think is total bullshit. there is not a difference in the material, just a damn carb number) and the company can’t send it out to California:gay:. I guess I just got a little too excited when I saw “acura integra catalytic converter” and immediately hit buy now on ebay. So now my new cat is gonna be delayed until I get my refund. LOL.
Direct bolt on cat is too expensive. get the universal cat just need to be welded and much cheaper. You can buy them at auto parts store price range from $135-$427. Kragen auto parts sells the california catalytic universal for $180+ out the door and has a lifetime warranty. try asking NAPA auto parts i think its cheaper.

Ebay has a california catalytic converter from Magnaflow for 85 free shipping. and its universal with 2.25 inch inlet and outlet. The wrong one I ordered, was the same thing, just not for california use, and it was 65.10 free shipping. I think eBay is better. But thanks
yapp you need a hot cat to work. you need a certain temp. tell the smog tech to idle it for 5-8mins. untill you it goes to a normal temp. then hook it up on the smog machine.
sometimes seafoam is some what cleans your engine but bad for your injectors. it makes your injectors leak even more.
Yeah as far as killing the cat goes, I think I killed my cat the first seafoam. After the first treatment my exhaust would spit out the condensation with soot all over the ground (possibly unburnt fuel) and the exhaust would pop every now and then. New cat, and I’ll be changing out the o2 sensor as well since that 02 sensor went through the seafoam treatment 2 times as well
Question for you after you put the new cat on an smog it an pass are you going to take it offan run the old one so if you ever seafoam again or do anything again it wont mess up the cat an an you will have a fresh cat for the next smog in two years?
I’m debating on it. I’ll probably have the new cat welded in and have it made so i can detach it and put in a straight pipe so I can keep it fresh for the next smog. It’s an idea.
