I have come to the conclusion that over many many times of regreasing the speedometer cable that grease has itself gotten into the speedometer in the gauges. This is verified by seeing that grease on my trip meter numbers. I also belive this is what is causing inacurate speed readouts.
Is it possible to dissasemble the gauges and clean the speedometer? I am excellent when it comes to taking things apart and putting them back together.
Yes its possible to do. There’s screws holding the gauges on the housing, just take them off and pull the gauges out. Or spray them down with carb/break cleaner
I was able to take it apart most if the way and clean it out using alcohol. I think that cable, which was brand new a month ago is defective because I had to lube it when I got it.
I have ordered another gauge cluster off ebay that is pretty clean and I am going to switch the speedometer out in my original cluster. There is a crack in the plastic on the old speedometer and wonder if this is causing the needle sticking issue. I found a way to switch my main odometer over to keep the numbers correct. I am also switching the cable with an exchange from Acura.
After this is all done and said I am lining the inside of the cluster with chrome sticky paper to make the light scatter better with my LED lights.
Working on getting my speedometer going right is a total pain in the ass.
