can't get a/c to blow cool

I recently put a/c on a non a/c teg and I can’t get it to run real cold. I replaced the accumalator and the compressor works. I have plenty of freon even though it leaks out slowly when the a/c is off. It will blow cold then cool\luke warm. It does this randomly just enough to keep me from breaking a sweat. Is the expansion valve bad? I will get it vacuumed out soon to change anything that is needed. What is the pressure suppose to be on the hot and cold when off? Any help would be great. I’ve been searching and getting decent info, but no real answer. thanks

our tegs can hold up to 2lbs of r12 and upto 2 1/2lbs of r134a. I advise you to fix the leak 1st before you do any damge to the system. I provided you with a link so you can better understand how it works and what happens when stuff starts to leak out. Anyways the reason being it comes out cold witch is good then go’s to cool/luke warm is b/c your expansion valve is freezeing up do to lack of freon or if you use r134a. Remind you our and other cars a/c system works like the ones we have in our houses.

Anyways I hope thse are useful. GL. anything you wanna ask just let me know.

hey i still have the r12 stuff in mine and when i turn my ac on it blows cool just not cool enough, like i still can break a sweat and i was wondering if its because maybe my ac fan isn’t working on the radiator or if i need to recharge it, and if i need to recharge it how when r12 is no longer legal?? i don’t want to spend the money to replace everything to convert

Thanks for the links and the replies. I just had if vacuumed today, maybe it had too much air in it. I never vacuumed it before so we’ll see if this works and if not then I’ll try the expansion valve.

For the other guy, there is stuff to replace r12 with…freeze 12 and whatnot. do a search, but I remember seeing some people talk about different r-12 replacements.

Which brings me to another question. The reason why I have r-134 is because the guy sold me the wrong oil and I poured it into a dry compressor and accumalator before I noticed. Now that it’s vacuumed out should I just go get the freeze-12? or should I just put the r134 in it? I was thinking since it was vacuumed out I should be clean enough to put freeze-12 in it, but I don’t know. I will be fixing this tomorrow. thanks for any replies

Np, good to hear the info I gave you helped… Anyways I don’t see how it could be a problem putting freeze 12 in the system after r-134a was in there since ethier way you gotta put new valves on anyway so the connecter from the bottle can fit. But as long that you have the system vacuum out really good then you can use freeze 12. It’s been done before and there isn’t any side effects from it after r-12 to r-134a to freeze-12. I’ve been running r-134a for almost 3 years and never had a problem with it. But before you put freeze-12 in there, give it another round of vacuum just to make sure there isn’t air or any oils from the other stuff in there. You don’t want diffrent oils mixing together since thats a very bad thing.

and falcon, over time the chem make up breaks down like motor oil does. except it takes longer. What happens is the r-12 and the other stuff is constenly being compressed to make it cold going threw the low pressure line then expaning going threw the high pressure line witch can be hot. going threw the same process over and over and over threw the system and all the goodys in the system breaks it down. so back in 91 or w/e year your car is, it came out nice and cold on a 100 degree weather and here you are 14 to 16 years later it’s not coming out as cold as it use to be. You can still get r-12. But only a few repair shops still have them but it’s also very costly to recharge a system with r-12 in it. Like the other guy said, your better off converting to ethier r-134a or freeze-12. I hope this helps.

well i heard converting to r-134 is more costly, because you have to replace the compressor and a shit load of other stuff…

I also converted to R134a about 3 years ago. I used a $20 conversion kit, new drier, new expansion valve, and took the car to the shop for a evacuation and pulled a vacuum on the system. I needed a new compressor, but you do not need to swap the compressor to convert to R134a. You only need to replace the oil in it with the oil in the kit. My air has been perfect ever since, and I have 300K miles on all the other components.

My condensor fan went out and I had the same problems you stated. If your condensor fan is not coming on, then the only time you will get real cold air, is when you first start the car when its cool or when you get alot of air flow thru the condensor, like on the hwy.

I never had to replace the drier, and the expansion valve. Plus it’s been coming out nice and cold since I got it done. I almost lost my a/c when I hit a deer 2 winters ago when the rad support and the horn almost took out the drier. It was just touching it.

i found a local shop who sells freeze 12 here and i think I’m going to fix my a/c now!!, i just have to find someone who will put it in

You can put it in your self. It’s pretty easy to do.

can you explain how to do so…

theres a connector that goes on pretty much like an air tool and you just charge it up until it’s in the proper pressure range. most refill kits come with a gauge, but make sure to get one that does. It’s pretty easy. I just learned how to do it myself. shake can or hold it upside down if it’s completely empty for the first can. wrap a warm rag around it too because it gets cold. This helps put it in better from what I read.

Anyone know what year it was they switched from r12 to r134a? I’ve got a 92 and i’m thinking she just needs to be recharged, and just not sure what system i’ve got in the car. I’ve got peeps telling me it was 91 or 92 the changeover was done (at least in Canada)

they started the r 134 i think around 95-96…either way i’m positive a 92 has the r-12 unless it was converted in the past

90 thru 93 has r-12 in it.

Did you have to change your hoses? I’ve been getting conflicting info on this.

Nope, I listed everything that I changed.

Excellent. Thanks! I’m doing pretty much the same thing as you did, but a local shop told me the R-134a would leak from my R-12 hoses in a matter of days.

Mine hasn’t leaked since I filled it 3 years ago. I bought a cheap refridgerant pressure tester, and it has been fine.

That’s what I expected. My dad had his R-12 system converted to R-134a years ago using the original hoses, and it didn’t leak either. I’ve heard that the R-12 hoses absorb mineral oil in service, which forms its own barrier and prevents leaks of the smaller R-134a molecules.

I’m sure I’ll be fine if yours worked. There’s no way my system will see as much load as yours.
