Can't get axle into transmission!

I’m changing my passenger side axle and I’ve removed the broken axle (torn boot), and I’m attamepting to install the new axle into the tranny.

Well, the damn thing will not go in! I’ve been trying for about an hour. I used lots of gear oil for lubrication. The axle will slide in pretty easily but will then hit something, which I believe is the splines in the tranny. Once it hits this, it will not move any further no matter how hard I push. It will turn somewhat freely, but the other wheel does not turn which means that the splines have not connected.

The other side went in after some pushing, but I’m very frustrated with this side.

The splines on the new axle aren’t cut very well, I’ve noticed. I don’t think they are mushroomed, but the OEM axle was cut cleaner.

So, I need advice…keep pushing and stop being a ***** (not likely… ), or are there some tricks?

The retainer clip came out with the old axle, and the splines in the tranny appear to be fine.

Dammit:down:

Thanks for any help.

I say grab another axle…If u think the splines r messed…Juss leave it…

Im assuming its a reman correct???

Well, just to test it out, I reinstalled the OEM axle back in to try and see what may be wrong, and it stopped at the same point. I pushed and turned a bit and it f***ing slid right in.

I don’t have time to get another axle since they’ll need a day to reorder.

I’m going to keep trying to get this one in.

Good luck man…

I say MAYBE try grabbing a file to clean up the splines…
But it might make things worse…

Lemme know how it goes…
HTH…

Well, I got it in. I ended up filing the small outer splines of the axle (on the outside of the retaining clip) into shape. It still would not go in. Then I filed once more, and pinched the clip so it sat almost flush with the splines. :argh:

While trying to push it in, I scraped my hand on plastic covering, and I grapped a hammer and whacked the fenderling. I pushed on the axle, and it went straight in.

So that’s all set.

Thanks for the reply CVG2.

WORD!!!

Good one…
