G2sleeperstyle and I went to Southeastern Dragway (1/8 mile) to make some runs tonight. We both have B16 swaps (I know B16’s suck). He’s running 10.6’s and my best tonight was a 10.9. I have tried every launch technique I can think of (in my limited experiance) at a few different rpm points and haven’t been able to get a 60 ft any better than a 2.5. It feels like my car bogs down really bad when I get traction. My best 1/8 ever was last year when I ran a 10.8.
My set-up: B16 swap (J1 tranny), AEM cai, B20 throttlebody, P30 intake manifold, DC Sport 4-2-1 (crap header, I know), high flow cat, Tanabe Hyper exhaust, B&M shifter…I know they are just bolt-ons. I don’t want to go into the motor because I’m stock-piling parts for my lsvtec.
Here’s my runs from tonight:
R-1.058
60-2.524
594-10.253
1/8-10.946
mph-64.94
R-.875
60-2.645
594-10.391
1/8-11.070
mph-66.26
R-.728
60-2.535
594-10.357
1/8-11.058
mph-64.12
last year (4,500 rpm and dumped clutch)-
R-1.311
60-2.554
1/8-10.880
mph-?
Tonight I was launching between 2,500 and 3,500 rpm’s and feathering the clutch the best I could. I’m running on 205/40R17’s with tire pressure dropped to 20 psi in the front (I know they are not good for drag racing, I can’t afford drag radials for my steelies yet). I’m starting to think I just need to rev the ever-loving piss out of it when I launch. I just don’t understand why I’m not able to run as good of times as John (g2sleeperstyle) when we both have the same engine and tranny and I have a lot more stuff done to my teg. I’m aiming to get down to the 10.5-10.6 area.
I forgot to mention that John and I went a month or two back and I ran two 11.2’s and a 11.1, so I improved, but I feel I can do better.
Yep, you are revving WAY to low to get good times, you’re revving lower than I do for a b18a even.
Feathering the clutch is pretty worthless at that low of an rpm because you are hardly putting any power down anyway. In fact, since you don’t have that much power to begin with, some guys (who are apparently better drivers than me ) keep the tire pressure high to help them roll out of the hole quicker. I’d try holding your revs up at around at LEAST 5,000 rpm, and feathering the clutch from there.
All last year my best 60’s were like very high 2.4’s. This year, (I’m turboed now) I’ve found that when I completely break the tires loose, take my foot all the way off the gas, then step back into the throttle, I’m getting better launches than I did all last year.
Stu, thanks for the advice. That’s pretty much the direction I’m leaning towards so I’ll give that a shot (hopefully this Friday night).
Sargentboy, we ran at the 1/8 mile strip in Dallas, Ga. It’s little northwest of Atlanta. I’ve run once in Commerce, Ga. which is near the Ga.-S.C. border. That’s where I got the 1/8 time from last year (10.8, but my cd player fell down in front of my shifter and kept me from shifting into third, so I got a horrible 1/4 time out of it). I’ve been to Silver Dollar (a little south of Macon).
Hmmm…looks like I’m gonna start launching at much higher rpm’s. I’d go back out tonight, but I don’t have anyone to watch my son and he’s only 1 1/2 so he can’t come along with me if I’m running. Maybe next Friday.
I’m assuming your VTEC engages at the stock RPM point?
I launch mine at 4400 with excelent results, almost NO spinning, just grip and go. I had 17’s and a CM stage 4 also. VTEC engaged at 4500, so if I went above that I would just smoke tires and go no where. if i were you I would go to a back road and practice until you find that fine line between bogging and spinning.
your 60’ are high 2.4s and ur running 14’s damn… im low to mid 2.4s … like 2.43 and im at 15.6 in the 1/4 mile… and my 2.43 60’ is on 30 dallor goodyear wal-mart tires… on my steelies dumping at 3-4k and spinning 3/4 of 1st gear and half of a lil of second gear… hehe I got some kumho’s now… cant wait to see if I can break 15.4
My best 60’ was a low 2.3 (almost a 2.2) and I ran a 14.004 @ 102 mph on the brakes. Otherwise, my best full throttle run was a 14. 012 @ 106.87 mph. I need to take the car to a test and tune once I get it tuned.
Yes it engages at the stock rpm point. The first time I ever ran my car (last year) I launched from around 4,000 rpm or so (can’t remember exactly anymore) and got what I thought was a lot of wheel spin, which is why I started launching at lower rpms (and getting even worse times). I think that since all I did the first time was dump it (no feathering) that maybe I was on the right track back then and I just need to launch somewhere between 4,000 and 5,500 and feather the clutch and see what I can get out of it. Enough talk, I’m going back Friday night. We’ll see what I can do.
