car battery reading 18 volts

this morning my car wouldnt start, not even while being jump started. So i went to get it charged and they said it was bad. they then gave me a free replacement ( duralast gold ) and after putting it in the volts reading on my capacitor is reading 17-18 volts while idleing and 12 volts when off.
So does theis mean my alternator is bad or could it be the battery is OVER charged if that is possible? thanks in advance

If it reads 12V with the car OFF, and 18V with the car ON, then the problem wouldnt be the battery itself… I’d check the output directly from the alternator and go from there.

i forgot to mention that i have a 2-12in sub set up and a 850w amp not sure if the fuse that is connected by the battery may have blown and would that cause this issue? also i checked it again right now and it is reading at a little more then 14 volts . It also smells like plastic burning but i dont see no fire lol i’ve heard of batteries that run that high of voltage can EXPLODE but i went ahead and just unplugged it till tomarrow to see what it reads then. just weird that this monday it was fine now it’s all messed up.

I would definitely test the alternator. Sounds like it make be overcharging while running

i had the same problem i went thru 2 batteries its the alternator trust i change mine and it went away

Don’t just trust what we say… Troubleshoot the system and properly diagnose it.

As I said, test the output directly from the alternator.

And no, a blown amp fuse won’t cause your battery to be overcharged… why would it? All the fuse controls is if the amp is getting power or not, it has nothing to do with the amount of voltage your battery is getting.

yea he’s right

but im 90% sure its the alternater

As am I… I’m just a fan of actual diagnosis versus taking someones word for it.

well i plugged up my battery right now and the battery light is on. Last time this happen is when the alternator went out on me so i leaning towards bad alternator. also i just dont know what could of caused the alternator to give out just like that out of no where.
i dont drive the car daily but i do start it up every now an then. at less once a week. so maybe the cold weather caused it to fk up on me. im just looking for st to blame it on lol. well now i have an excuse to do the legend alternater upgrade on it.
110 amp is better then 65 amps. all i have to do is put the pulley from my integra on to the legends? correct? i just dont wanna blow another alternator within a year cause of my system. thanks for all the advice , next stop UPGRADE .

the voltage regulator in the altanator is bad change the altanator

Like we’ve all said

X2 on that!! It always helps to gather ideas but you have to verify it by actual vehicle testing

Good advise… The alte
rnator has a built in voltage regulator so it might have burnt out. If that was the case I would assume you should have score of blown fuses. I think the highest I’ve ever seen the volts in idle is 14.v
Or maybe 15v
