Hey guys… Just had my teggy die 2 blocks from home.
was running fine then when I went to turn left it lost power. shuttered a little so I popped the clutch back in it kept running , so I started to let the clutch back out and it had no power and just died.
got it parked on the side of the road, got out the tool kit and pulled a plug to check spark. got nice clean white spark, so it isn’t anything electrical. I’m guessing it may be something with the fuel system, but when I turn the key to the on position main relay click and I hear the fuel pump prime.
wild guess would be fuel filter is clogged, but up until it died it was running just fine. the event was quite sudden.
Worst case I’ll have GEICO tow it to my mechanic tomorrow, but if anyone might have any ideas I’d love to hear em so I have an idea as to what I should expect expense wise.
the conditions that it died does point to a fuel related issue. usually when a car sputters to a stall, it is. i would attack fuel first. you need a gauge installed. go buy one and install it. even if it’s not the problem, a fuel pressure gauge always comes in handy, so just leave it installed. i believe i gave you sound instructions on performing a fuel pressure and flow test previously. get the gauge and follow those instructions. report back
thx bud will get that done. definitely a fuel issue I pulled a plug after trying to start it, and the plug was pretty dry so off to oreilly’s I go for a filter and a gauge
not the fuel filter… got that changed out. Unfortunately none of the local parts stores had the correct in line pressure gauge in stock, and the speed shops were all closed or closing.
at this point I may have to bite the bullet and let my mechanic deal with it. I can’t leave the car parked down the street past monday and if ima get a free tow from insurance it is gonna go to the shop.
All that aside I’ll run by pick n pull tomorrow to see if I can’t nab a injector resistor box and spare injectors… injection parts may be overkill at this early stage, but I’d rather have em than not and have to pay full price through the mechanic for new ones.
leaning toward a failing pump. I had to turn the ignition to the on position to unlock the steering wheel, so the pump primed, but when I disconnected the filter pressure bleeder there wasn’t gas spraying everywhere as I would have expected. All I got was overflow from the line draining back to the filter from the rail. Seen the Walbro pumps are cheaper on line that the off brands o’reillys & autozone carry so I may grab one of those if it is necessary.
Will post back when I learn more. May go try the cheap fuel injection pressure test kit from harbor freight… got a store near the house so yeah… Grrrr.
should be able to pick up a b&m gauge that threads onto the filter housing…
another quick mcgyver check you can do is injector pulse.
remove a 194 bulb from your corner marker. peel the tangs back. disconnect an injector connector and insert the bulb into the harness connector. crank the engine while watching the bulb to see if it flashes
I wasn’t turning the car over long enough to see that the spark was bright at first by dying out as it cranked. By the time the mechanic looked at it it had no spark at all. Replaced the distributor and all is right with the world.
Think it may have been that new coil I put in tho. upon visual inspection it had started cracking along the top and you could see white residue in the crack indicating it was bad enough to cause a discharge through the housing.
Anyways, I just replaced the whole distributor as I have had recent issues with it. and now have a new coil if anyone needs one haha. At least it was still under warranty.
