A common problem on G2s is the “PGM-FI Main Relay”, [main relay or fuel pump relay] the PGM-FI Main Relay pack contains two relays, fuel pump power relay and the injector power relay.
The PGM-FI Main relay is mounted just to the left of the steering column… http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/mainrelaylocation/7-main_relay_closeup.jpg
Try this, close the doors and windows, turn the ign. switch to run,NOT START you should hear the PGM-FI Main Relay “click” on at the same time the CEL, [check engine light] in the instrument cluster will come on, along with other ign. lights, also at the same time you should hear the fuel pump “hum”, within a few seconds you will hear the relay “click” again, the CEL goes out and the fuel pump stops, [no hum].
If any of the above is not happening in that order, the problem is probably the PGM-FI Main Relay.
There are some tests you can do to confirm that it is the PGM-FI Main Relay, it requires that you have access to the relay, you must remove the lower dash trim, the link I posted should help.
For the simple test all you need is a short piece of wire, [4" - 6" 18ga - 20ga] you will use the wire as a “jumper” to jump from the yellow/white, [12V+ constant] lead, in the relay plug to the yellow/black lead, [fuel pump power], there are two yellow/black leads, the second one is injector power, you will know when you have the right one, you will hear the fuel pump come on.
If you get the fuel pump running, turn on the ign. and try and start the car.
Let me know what happens.94
You jumped it and it just chimes??
Jumping from the 12V+ constant input to the relay, [yellow/white] to the fuel pump power output lead from the relay, [yellow/black] should turn on the fuel pump, there should be no chimes, all that should happen is you should hear the fuel pump hum, you are bypassing the relay, if the pump does not turn on you have a problem with the pump, the wiring to the pump, or there is no power on the yellow/white, fuse 38 - 10A, [hot at all times] in under hood fuse box.
Make sure you have the right yellow/black.
If the fuel pump does not come on when you supply power directly to it, the problem is not the PGM-FI Main Relay.:whisper: 94
what does my fuel pump have to do with this? i do have a kill switch if that matters. its not starting at all so the fuel pump has no action in this situation, but im going to try again when i get home ill let you know
what does my fuel pump have to do with this?
Your kidding right?
If your fuel pump is not working, the car will not start, at all.
The most common cause of the fuel pump not working is a problem with the PGM-FI Main Relay, to confirm or eliminate the PGM-FI Main Relay as the problem, you bypass it by supplying power directly from 12V+ to the fuel pump power lead, at the PGM-FI Main Relay plug, if the pump, and the wire running to it, are good the pump will turn on, if it does no you have a problem with the pump or it’s wiring, not the relay.
Let me ask you this, when you say the car will not start, what exactly do you mean?
Motor turns over but will not fire?
Motor does not even turn over?
The video is a little out of focus, and I have no sound, so I can see the ign. lights come on, I can even see the tach move, I assume the motor is turning over, but will not start.:hmm:
Yes a kill switch can make a diff., it depends on the switch size, [amperage] and what wire it is connected to.:roll:94
lol the motor is not turning at all. you have to have sound to understand the video. In that video the car starts my first try but i turned it off so it wont start again for the video to show you.
OIC, that makes a big diff., motor not turning over has nothing to do with the fuel pump or the PGM-FI Main Relay or any of the wiring associated with them.
Tell me this, I also see the ign. lights go out and/or dim in the video, is that happening when you try and start the car?
EG; you turn on the ign., the ign. lights in the cluster come on, then when you turn the ign. switch to start they go out or dim almost out.
Also, when it will not turn over, is there any sounds at all, a “click” from under the dash or the engine bay?
Here is something to try, next time it will not turn over, using a jumper lead, [10ga] jump from the batt. pos.(+) terminal to the starter motor solenoids trigger input, it id the thinner of the two leads on the solenoid, [the other is the batt. lead] and can be unplugged.
Make sure car isNOT IN GEAR as you are bypassing the starter relay and ign. switch.
Let me know what happens.:hmm:94
If you stand on the pass. side of car looking into the engine bay the starter motor/solenoid is below and a little to the back, [fire wall] of the distributor, it will have a heavy gauge cable running to it from the batt. poss.(+), it is held in place with a nut on a stud, the trigger lead is a much smaller gauge and it is only “plugged” in, unplug it and touch the jumper to the terminal, did I mention to make sure car is NOT in gear, you do not even need the ign. on for the starter motor to work. 94
i didnt read all post but i know that if its the main fuel relay it will atleast turn over. sounds like your not getting spark or your starter. good luck
