car idles up & down only when cold

my car idles up and down only when it’s cold. and lately it’s been idling high at warm up (2700 rpm). normally it’s suppose to be at about 1500 rpm. once the car is warmed up, it runs fine back to 700 rpm. me being a mechanic check out all the basic things such as vacuum leak, set the idle speed, check timing, and etc. i’m hoping it’s not the idle speed controller (eacv) cause that thing is expensive even if it’s my cost at the shop. any suggestions would help besides telling me to change the EACV. thanks.

member Julian has the same problem. I think itz the fast idle valve.

julian…have you tried replacing it and see if it work?

Off topic, but I had the screen name “AZN” before the site went down last summer. I decided to use my current name on this board and I’m still using the name “AZN” on other boards.

Have you fixed your idle problem yet?

might i suggest something? I was in the same boat, the car would have a fluctuating idle until completely warmed. After I added a near gallon ( <- exaduation ) of coolant to my radiator the problem went away.

over cooling maybe…? check the thermostat, or infact just change it for about $15 for thermostat and gasket.

i still have that problem. i replaced the fast idle valve and that did nothing either. i still don’t know what the problem is. when i start it up, the idle fluctuates up and down. i can’t find any vacuum leaks or nothing. when i try to do an engine code check, it also shows me nothing. if anyone figures out what the problem really is, please email me.

yup, i’ve already check the coolant it’s full. no it’s not over cooling either. it’s got a new thermostat in it plus i made sure it opened at the right temperture too. in addition to that the coolant temp sensor was also replaced. still having the same problem. i guess i’ll wait for another week or so for any more suggestions before going ahead and replacing the EACV and then maybe the fast idle valve. hey, thankx for the suggestions peeps.

my problem is identical to yours. it started after I swapped my B16 in. at first it would just bounce all the time no matter what the engine temp. then I brought it to a honda tech who tightened my idle screw or something like that. it seemed to work, but that’s just cuz the engine was still warm when he did it. now it revs upto around 3k drops slowly for a minute until it gets to around 2k and then it bounces until the temp is normal and then it runs just fine.
I can’t believe that with such a common problem that more people don’t know how to fix it. you can find references elsewhere on this board to a bouncing idle problem. The two most commonly prescribed solutions is to get a new IACV (idle air control valve) or get a new TPS sensor. The TPS sensor is riveted onto my TB so I won’t mess with that until tomorrow. What happens tomorrow? my new intake manifold will be installed and the manifold has a new IACV on it. hopefully this will fix it. if it doesn’t I gotta figure a cheap way to get a new TPS sensor. If you find a solution, please post it; it prolly should even be a teg tip. I will post tomorrow with the results of my new manifold.

if u need help email me deeznutz373@aol.com

NAb16teg…are hmoob??? jus curious. let me know if your car idles any better. mine only does it when it’s cold especially in the morning. once it warms up it idles normal.

i have been having the same problem in my teg too, and i dont have any clue how to fix it either. I am about to take it to the dealership and see if they can fix it.

Your idle maybe set too high.
Pull the connector on EACV and readjust your idle.

a repair manual that i have says the tps sensor cannot be replaced seperately from the throttle body, is this correct?

you definately have a vacuum leak somewhere. if iacv is bad it should be a really FAST fluctuation. If you replace the iac and it still lopes, try pinching the vacuum tubes coming out of your intake manifold one by one -while the engine is running. This should lead you to the problem. also check your idle screws to make sure your butterfly is open on idle… i have a friend that had a problem with that.

90Sedan…i’ve already tried that too. i’ve even tried setting it lower than the spec. still, same thing in the morning. up and down.:stuck_out_tongue:

AZN; what’s hmoob? Anyways, the new IACV worked. I have a spare one from another manifold I bought. Email me if you wanna try it. I am just curious to see if we can reproduce the solution. chuckvelocity@hotmail.com

:frowning: any last word b4 i go and change the IACV this week?

you can always just take it off and try to clean it with carb/ brake cleaner. lots of people on this site recommend it, so i’m going to do it today, and i’ll let you guys know if it worked or not. alright. laters

btw, this problem was fixed back in Feb 2002. it was the Fast Idle Valve. i’ve also found out a way to fix them without buying another one. all they need is to be is adjusted. if you guys have the same problem and want me to show you how to adjust it, just e-mail me.
