My car has been recently stalling at very random times…atleast once or twice everyday of driving/commuting.
It will mainly happen when I’m on the freeway as well as during times of traffic when I stop and go. More descriptively, the car will feel like it seized up and when you depress the gas pedal you can’t give it gas. Instead, the rpm gradually drops until it finally stalls.
I am running an untunned DB1 with a recent B20 swap. Could it be that I’m flooding the engine for it to lock up like that?
I don’t know if it could be my fuel pump giving out, injectors, or the fuel filter (as it’s relatively new). There were no CODES. I’ve had my MFR, Plugs, Wires, and distributor replaced as well. All vacuum related lines have been replaced as well. No possible leaks I suspect. Compression strong throughout all cylinders. Normal operating oil pressure (~25psi idle ~85psi@3k rpm)
I don’t want to place anyone in danger or cause any accidents. Please someone help me diagnose this weird problem…
Yes, the IGN stays on when the car stall. What I also know is that I’d have to wait for about 30 seconds till it (w.e. that may be) clears up I can restart, crank, and turn over the car. It would not, however, let me start the car once immediately after the stall.
Failing ignitors often react to heat and cause this very condition. Symptoms would also include the Tach dropping to zero RPMs when the stall begins. If you replace the ignitor, go OEM.
UPDATE.
So I’ve replaced the distributor with a new one. It now intermittently stalls at least once or twice a day (while idling and/or cruising) . I’ve checked for the plugs and pins from both the engine harness and distributor and are in good condition…
I’ve checked for codes and the only code I’m getting is a CEL 1 (O2 sensor) which I don’t believe can be the primary cause of the problem…but could be. I temporarily disconnected it. Still runs.
I’ve also noticed that when I am driving and it begins to stall…the engine feels like it’s choking out. I depress the gas pedal and nothing. Appears that I can’t give it gas and I’ll keep it in neutral pull over and it will stall with dash lights on. Typically when you are in neutral and you’re just idling your car is still running; mine stalled and was the opposite case of that.
Again, I would have to wait for a minute to start the car up again to get her rolling…
Could it be possible that my fuel pump is giving out and causing this weird issue? I have not ruled out that possibility yet and would like some advices.
Sometimes, when the pump is going bad, the pump will get hot and shut off. Does it happen more often when tank is below half or 1/4? If it is, this might be the case. A full tank helps keep the pump cool. It only shuts off when it heats up. It is going bad. Also does the gas gage drop to empty? That is a different problem!
Also, I have heard of the ground having problems on the fuel pump. Some people have striped back some wire and put a sheet metal screw through in into the body to ground the pump. I have never personally tried this before, but sometimes getto fixes work!
Ended up being a hot connection between the kill switch and the fuel pump wire that I rigged up. Took out the kill switch and did some rewiring. Works flawlessly and 3 days of no stalling
