Hey guys, a little new to G2ic. Been going here a lot to help me out with my problems. I have a 1991 Integra GS with a b20 swap. I bought it like this 3 months ago. Very new to cars and have been researching my ass off online. Checked around this forums and not much people have the same problem as me.
Occasionally my car wont start (just cranks). I’d say every 10 starts it wont start. At first I just pressed the gas while it was cranking then it would start. It has recently been getting worse and now it is taking longer to start, even while pressing down the gas. I’ve read on the forums that the main fuel relay could be the problem, but I don’t think its an electrical problem because I have to press the gas( I could be wrong). I’m leaning more towards a fuel problem. I’ve tried to hear if the fuel pump would turn on when my car would only crank but it’s hard to tell with my radiator fan bypassed to be always on. I plan on having a friend turn the key while I hear through the gas tank, but the car never seems to be at the right place when it wont start. So it’s hard to diagnose. Any article links on how to check fuel pressure, diagnose injectors, and checking if fuel pump works all the time without having to listen for sound would help. Haven’t really noticed check engine light. It would just blink when I turn on car for a little bit then go off, figure thats normal?
Sorry for the long write, just getting really confused/frustrated. Appreciate you guys for understanding. Any feed back would help :bowthank:
Oh and also, idk if this is connected to it but sometimes when I press the break it messes with my radio, kind of makes it studder
Could be all sorts of things, do you have the tools to dig a little deeper? If you need to give it gas it’s also possible that your intake is partially blocked or gunked up, and it’s very easy to check for simple stuff like that before you go nuts with troubleshooting fuel/spark/timing/etc.
Edit: Also, don’t be so quick to remove the MFR from the equation, it’s notorious for being misleading with it’s symptoms of failure in our cars. If you have a spare or someone with one, swap it out just to be sure. It’s the cheapest and easiest thing to troubleshoot and should always be first if your engine cranks but doesn’t start.
Where is the MFR again? I’ve read its the relay nearest to do the hood latch? I’m going to search the forums and hopefully ill find a good read. I’m going to spray some simple green in my throttle body and see if that will do the trick.
So I’ve been getting help through honda-tech forums and team-integra. Some have told to try to prime(turn key to II) multiple times and hear if fuel pump works, then start car and see if the it will start. I guess this is used to tell if fuel pump becomes weak after priming it. I’ve primed 4 times and started, worked fine. Then did it around 8 times which is usually how many starts it takes for the car to not start. I forgot to mention that I noticed the no starting issue happening when my car has been in hot weather for a while. Whether it’s sitting or driving around.
Also got other people telling me to replace fuel filter and do basic tune ups and maintence like inspect spark plugs/distributor/and fuel pressure. Currently looking up how to do these as I have never even touched any of these. Hopefully I will buy a gauge soon and check the pressure when my car doesnt start to see if it’s a fuel issue. Can anyone tell me how to inspect if my spark plugs/distrubtor cap and rotor work fine? thanks for all your help
Results! So it is definitely the heat that is causing this no start. Right after school, after car has been sitting for 7 hours in straight sun ( 95 degrees) it wouldnt start. I managed to get it to start by pressing gas again. So I went home, bought a solder iron and solder. Took out the MFR, was a bitch especially with that coin tray(btw is the coin tray necessary? i find it really a nuisance). Resolderd it. I think i did an okay job, took a while and think I did too much on a few tips. Anyways I put it back and car started fine, but thats because it was sitting in my garage and its not hot. So the real test is tomorrow, when i try to start in the heat. Will get back to you. thanks guys.
ok, just spent my pocket money on a solder for the MFR. if the car doesn’t start iin the heat tomorrow, I will definitely bring a gauge with me. ( gotta buy 1 first )
results: So my car started first try in the heat today, after school. Very happy. The weather wasnt as hot as the other days but it still made the car hot. Hopefully this is a permanent fix. I’ll get back to you guys if the car doesnt start again. Thanks for all your help
