Car stalls for a bit when accelerating abruptly after turning or braking

I find that my car stalls for a bit when accelerating abruptly after turning or braking. It’s as if when I press the accelerator pedal right after braking, the car would not move for a second, before lurching back into action. The same occurs after making a sharp turn, but that too could be caused by abrupt braking, as one invariably needs to brake before conducting such a turn.

I would like to know why my car is doing this, and what needs to be repaired. I’d also like to know if this is repair should be conducted immediately. As of this moment, I don’t find this much of an issue (apart from the fact that my prospects at winning an auto cross championship are slim), but if this is a “stitch in time saves nine” kind of thing, then that would be important to know.

I have attempted a few searches, but my shallow vehicular knowledge limits me to vague descriptions of the issue as seen above.

Car Specs:
1991 DA9 Acura Integra
B18A1 Engine
Automatic Transmission

Mods: Short ram intake with K&N air filter

Things that I know that need to be changed:

  • Engine mounts (tell tale interior console vibration)
  • Spongy brakes (Which could be attributed to air in the brake lines, although I just bled them last year)

Sounds like the Automatic tranny may be sticking a little…

Now I could be wrong here too so take this with a grain of salt, but on AT equipped vehicles there is a filter assembly that requires being cleaned/ filter changed every so often. Failure to maintain this can result in hesitation wheile accelerating, and eventually lead to rough shifting and clunking to total tranny failure.

I would start by replacing the AT filter and do a fluid change. See if that helps at all. Change the motor mounts if they are completely busted. Keep in mind this is a pricey repair as OEM mounts are not cheap, but should be noted that I drove with a busted front mount for a bit and had no hesitation or stalling issues in my acceleration. But I also have a Manual tranny.

so in a nutshell do or have done a typical filter / fluid replacement and see if there is still a stalling out feeling when accelerating. the fact that this happens durning braking or turning (I.E. decelerating) could be in relation to the transmission dropping to your acceleration gear to get you back to speed before shifting itself to cruising gear. Hence the hesitation or feeling of stalling etc.

A sticking automatic transmission may be the issue, although I replaced the fluid just last year- its not due for its 2 year replacement interval just yet. I’ve also read that the the automatic Integra does not have a transmission filter.

I will nonetheless bring this up with my mechanic tomorrow, as a new symptom has cropped up- a loss of power, making the car barely drive-able.

I think the issue is a vacuum leak though, as there is the characteristic hissing sound, and the aforementioned symptoms also point to a vacuum leak. I would test for a vacuum leak, but apart from the intake, IACV, and fuel injector areas, I don’t know where to spray the throttle body cleaner/propane.

It’s also a relatively cheap fix. Hopefully.

Thanks for the input.

You may be right there. Vaccum lines are all pretty easy to trace they are all pretty much topside around the intake manifold.

May also want to check around the map sensor assembly. sometimes those valve caps ( the 2 identical ones) will have the rubebr underneath crack and cause leaks you might normally miss. Had that happen on my old prelude as it had almost identical map assembly as the DA.

Had a look yesterday- there was a tiny hole on one of the small hoses connected to some beige mushroom looking thing with a + sign on it near the intake. Fortunately, the hole was near one of the ends, so I just snipped the hose a bit past the location of the hole, and reattached the hose. I used plastic tie cables to prevent the hose from coming off, as the hose now barely goes past the metal connector.

The car now runs perfectly.

Again, thanks for the input. If the issue crops up again, I will definitely check those locations for any leaks or cracks.

Awesome! GLad ya got it fixed up man
