car starts, but bogs and stalls.....searched!

i got my sister a 93 integra special edition because of my great experience with my g2. anyway its all stock with 114k miles and its an automatic. The timing belt went on the last owner and he had the head rebuilt and a new timing belt put in. So the car has a new tb, headgasket, and rebuilt head. the car has ran great for a couple months but the other day it gave me a hard time starting it. I thought my sis ran it out of gas. I put gas in and it still started hard, but was then fine.

The next day I go to start it and it cranks for about 8 seconds and then fires up. However it idles very erraticly and bogs really bad. When I push the gas it boggs worse and pops and backfires. After about 10 seconds of this, it stalls. I went back today and its doing the same thing. The car is mint and has had all maintenance done. Just put in a new starter. Distributor only has 15k on it. Wires are newer. Not sure about plugs.

Only other thing I can think of is that her aftermarket performance catback just broke at the weld on the flange for the cat. We took it somewhere and they welded it in place. There is also a nice smell of gasoline.

Please help my baby sister.

P.S. I searched and could not find anything similar.

Thanks

duno.
im not one of the more experienced people here on the forum but there are some free things you can try.

you said you weren’t sure about plugs, pull them out 1 at a time, check the wire boot for holes/damage. check the gap and condition of each plug before reinstalling. at least you can say you checked them.

you said you smell gas, i get a little of a gas smell from my car as well and the exhaust is slightly off (and leaking) just behind the catalytic converter.
i just need to get under it and adjust the bolts but haven’t bothered.

if i were you, i would get underneath it and check for any damage that may have come from the person that welded your stuff.
and if it can be removed, check the catalytic converter for blockage, possibly see how it runs after unhooking the cat converter.

when you say theres a new distributor, where did this distributor come from? did it include a new coil and ignition unit.

this all sounds ignition related to me. has the motor been washed recently? check for moisture in the cap and plug shutes if so.

It could be you need a new fuel pump. You said after you put gas in it it fired up? I would check fuel pressure, my guess is the pump is barely putting out any fuel. If that checks out ok then I would start look elsewhere. Since you said the distributor is new that pretty well rules out ignition components. Check the spark plugs though and it wouldn’t hurt to pull the distributor cap off and take a look. Also, did the check engine light come on? If so see what code is in the ecu. Oh and I doubt the exhaust repair is related, the only way it would be is if the welding fried the ecu which is very rare.

I thought the car was out of gas and i did add some, but I don’t think that was the problem. I still had to crank it awhile before it would start and I think I just gave up too soon before.

The distributor was replaced when the head was rebuilt. It has a clear green cap, which I have never seen before.

I guess my old man put some fuel injector cleaner through it the day before it started up. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it. It barely had any gas in it when he put it in.

I’m gonna pull the plugs when I get a chance and replace them just because. See if that does anything

I have only tinkered with the car for a few minutes. I am changing the engine in my Ranger right now and am kinda busy, but I need to get this figured out.

the only other thing I noticed was that one of the injectors is kinda loose and you can turn it relatively easy. I don’t know if that could be a problem.

Keep the opinions coming, I will take any advice you guys have. I love these cars and know them pretty well, but nothing beats the power of multiple minds together.

Thanks

here are some pics of my sisters car (green se), and mine (blue gs)…just for fun

Looking at those pics of mine still makes me really sad…

a green clear cap? sounds like junk, TBH. i think blkac is right in assuming it’s ignition related. (smell of gas, stalling, erratic idle).
what i would do is check for codes first. if there are none, check for spark. and remember that the check engine light does not need to be illuminated in order for a code to be stored.
and if you find no spark, don’t assume it’s the distributor. because a dying main relay will also cause this as well
go hunting and report back
