Ok here is the situation. I have a 92 Teg with the B16 in it sometimes when I goto start my car I will turn the key and then a couple seconds later it will crank. I replaced the starter about 2 years ago. I went to leave the other day in the morning and it wouldn’t crank I could hear the click but it wouldn’t turn over. It eventually did after I kept trying. I need this fixed ASAP. I am going to check my grounds on the starter but I need other ideas also.
Where do you hear the “click” from, is it coming from under the dash, [starter relay if your car is a 5 speed] or from the engine bay, [starter solenoid, auto or 5 speed]?:hmm:94
So I just played around wtih it a little bit. Did find a loose wire but it’s not causing the problem cause I tightened it up and still had the same problem. I am thinking the starter is about the seize on me. I crank it and I can hear the click under the dash and also a loud on from the engine bay.
had the same problem could your your main relay or your ecu. for me it was the ecu
I crank it and I can hear the click under the dash and also a loud on from the engine bay.
Then it is probably the starter motor or the solenoid connection to the motor.
A connection problem can happen if when you tighten down the nut that holds the batt. cable to the starter motor is over-tightened and the stud itself turns, this will misalign the contact points, the symptoms are intermittent starting, having to hold the key in the start position or having to turn the key to the start positing repeatedly until it will crank the engine and it gets progressively worse.
If this is the problem it is sometimes reparable by turning the stud back to it’s proper position.
Disconnect the batt. neg.(-), using a closed end wrench, [so you can see the top of the stud] undo the nut holding the batt. cable, keep a close eye on the top of the stud to see if it moves/turns, it does not need to move very much, [1 or 2 degrees] if it does not move you will need to remove the nut and cable to access the nut that holds the stud in place and put the wrench on it to turn the stud, again you only need to move the stud, [and nut in this case] a very small amount.94
Thanks FCM I don’t think it’s the grounding cable. the loose was the small cable that plugs into the top of the starter. I think the motor is just starting to go. The ground stud does not turn
The ground stud does not turn
Ground stud???
I was not talking about a ground stud, I am talking about the stud on the starter motor that the batt. pos.(+) cable is connected to.:stare:94
key ignition switch not making contact try this turn the key to on don’t start it have you or a friend push the clutch then jump the wires at the starter if its starts then you know your ignition switch is bad.
i haven’t started my car by key in months i had to put a push button start
oh and maybe the clutch sensor is not making contact try to bypass just to see if that helps
Sorry I meant the positive stud on the motor. Could be the ignition switch as i’ve had a couple problems with it but with click click coming from the engine bay i dont think it is
The “click” you are hearing from the engine should be the starter solenoid engaging, meaning that everything to that point is working, leaving only the starter motor as the problem, [or the contact point I mentioned.
Try this…
Start by making sure car is not in gear, unplug starter lead at the starter motor solenoid, [thinner of the two leads at the starter motor] the then using a jumper lead with one end connected to the batt. pos.(+) terminal touch the other end to the starter terminal on the solenoid.
If all you get is a click, the problem is the starter motor, [or solenoid contact point] replace the motor.
If on the other hand, if the engine turns over, [reason car must be out of gear] then there is some other problem and the first thing I would want to know is, what is the click you are hearing in the engine bay when you try and start the car with the key.:hmm:94
PS NO, the ign. switch does not have to be on and no, you do not need to have someone stepping on the clutch to do the above test, just make sure car is not in gear.
