car won't start, help!

well, i was driving through my friend’s neighborhood, and my gas light went on, it was on for a few seconds, then i turned my car off… so i started the car back up, and the light went off, so i continued driving through his neighborhood, and the car just like started sputtering, then died. i tried to start it, it started, then shutoff.

so i went, filled up with like 1.2 gallons of gas, and now it won’t turn over, the fuel pump might not be coming on when i put the car in II ignition, i’m not sure…

could it just be that i need MORE gas?? hopefully, tell me what you guys think it could be, i’m gonna check for spark, my fuses, etc, but i’m kinda stumped as to why it happened at the same time that my gas ran out???

do a search. try checking ur main fuel relay, ignitor, coil. SEARCH.

okay, i did some searches, and found it useful, sorry for not taking the time for searching before, i don’t like when people ask stupid questions either, but the reason i asked specifically was because i was wondering if due to the fact that i ran out of gas that the problem would occur…

so my fuel pump “hisses”, i have a slight spark, it isn’t much one one, but it’s there, i’m going to check my plugs tomorrow morning, i’m too burned out tonight, and i guess i’ll have to check my distributor…

the engine cranks, but doesnt turn over, so what i mentioned before is what i should check, correct?

thanks for the help

check for spark … if no spark, it will be either your coil or ignitor … had the same problem as you (cranks, but won’t catch), and it was the ignitor. If you have spark, move to your fuel system … I bet you will find gas on the plugs tho, and no spark.

there was a slight spark, but there was gas on the plugs, so how can i check if its the ignitor or coil, and can i just get a coil/ignitor from my local discount auto parts or do i have to go to my acura dealer?

the reason i ask is i dont really have transportation to the acura dealer, and the auto parts store is right up the street… also, i tried popping the clutch, but it didn’t work, so maybe this could help in diagnosing the problem…

thanks

Sounds like your coil … have you looked inside your distributor? It’s possible your rotor is loose, or worn as well.
If you are going to replace your coil or ignitor, I would not buy anything besides Honda OEM … reason I say this is because I bought an OE replacement distributor from UAP/NAPA, and my coil in that one only lasted 4 months … so I went to Honda and bought the real deal (should say TEC on it).
You can test the ignition coil with a multimeter (that I am not sure how to use lol), what we did was I had a member with the same year Integra (must be same transmission too) come by, and we quickly swapped in his coil, and it worked, so that’s how we knew. See if any local members can help you out, it’s your best bet … maybe they can give you a lift to Honda as well ;). Good luck, and lemme know how it goes.

Oh and you should replace your rotor too, cheap, and you are there anyway.

Steve

what should i expect to pay for the coil and rotor?

and is it true that the prices are negotiable? so if i get one of my lady friends to go, i can get a discount?

also, say replacing the coil and rotor doesnt work, should i pick up an OEM ignitor while i’m there, and can i just return it if i don’t need it? – also, whats the price of one>?

thanks

not to sound naive, but where is the ignitor, and could somebody give me a brief explanation of how it works?

thanks

the ingitor and coil is found inside ur distrubitor. just open it up take off the rotor and the plastic shield. look down and first u will see the coil then a little lower u will see the ignitor, it has 4 wires running to it. 3 on top and 1 on the side of it. by how it works the word “ignitor” says it all. to ur price thing dont know if u can get discounts. just go to a place and try. dont know how much they cost.

thanks guys, i picked up a coil, put it in, and poof, my car runs again

i think i might pick up an exterior coil with an adapter, it’s cheaper, and does it produce a better spark/power?

Nice job, good to hear she’s running again! Where did you buy your coil (is it OEM)?
As for the external coil, I think you have to run a different cap, but yes, should provide better spark.

nope, crappy discount auto parts coil…

what i plan on doing is driving over to acura tomorrow, buying a nice new coil, and then slapping that on and returning the discount coil. i bought the coil so that i could check to see if it works, and also so that i would BE ABLE to drive to acura, the auto parts store is just up the street.

 hahaha … good thinking man!!! lol
