Car won't start - SOLVED!

I rarely post here at G2IC, but I solved a problem with my 92 Integra and thought that I would pass along some information. Recently my car had been suffering from the “delayed start” problem where I would turn the key and it would take 3-5 seconds for the car to start. A few times the car wouldn’t start at all  After reading a few posts here, I decided to try and replace the starter relay. This is a PITA to get to, just to the upper left of the glove box. As a clarification, this is NOT the PGMFI relay which is just under the steering column. I replaced that one back in June of 2008.

Check out this thread for relay location with pics!

Once I replaced the starter relay, the car starts first time every time and I have had no problems since. To see why the relay was causing so much trouble, I took it apart and I have attached some pictures. As you can see, the contact pads in the relay are scored and kind of charred looking. Most likely the result of bad contact over time, and sparks jumping the gap.

If you are having this problem, I would reccomend checking this relay out. The only problem is that this is now a discontinued part, and I had to order it from one of only two Acura dealerships in the US that still had one in stock. Otherwise this looks like it will be a DIY Radioshack job in the future.

The Acura Part Number and description for this relay is –> 39794-SK7-003, RELAY ASSY. (4P)
The Relay itself is a DENSO 056700-9250, 12V

Cheers!

I had a 3 to 4 second delay start too only in cold mornings. 1 second delay after a 8 hr work day. I swapped out the original denso starter with a rebuilt one. Now starter starts quick and on que. This was and year and half ago and still starting on que.

I know this is an old thread… Honda discontinued the starter relay.

Search for “Standard Motor Products RY171” I can verify it is the same as the oem one!
