carbon fiber hoods

hey im intrested in getting a carbon fiber hood. but where is the best place to buy one?

u need to call around. there honestly is no best anymore. there are just good, and the bad. the bad have fitment issues and yellow faster. the good, have rolled edges, usually the clear coat lasts longer too, and have hood latches so u don’t have to drill holes for hood pins or get a hood latch installed.

u could also try just searching for some in the for sale forum or online. vis is ok, not the best but they certainly aren’t bad. there are other companies out there, but u can start there.

even if the hood has a latch i would recommend getting hood pins of some sort. alot of companies make them like ViS, Seibon, FiberImages etc.

wats so special about hood pins?

If you have a lighter hood it increases the likely hood that it will fly up at highway speeds. Hood pins will prevent that. I wouldnt trust the latch they put on the hood. So unless you want a broken windshield and glass in your face id get hood pins.

Personally im getting a Seibon hood and Aerocatch hood fasteners.

thats for the advice. wats the price range on that combo?

well i guess its a risk some take and some don’t. if u look around with members here and their pics of their da’s/db’s… u’d see that quite a few do NOT have hood pins. of course the risk is there and that hood pins are a safer route.

personally i’d love to buy some that already had the holes pre-drilled. and those aero hood fasteners are very nice looking tho. i’d like those too.

hood is in the neighborhood of $500, Aerocatch about $100. you can probably find other hood fasteners for cheaper, i just really like Aerocatch.

My carbon fiber hood just came in the mail last week. I ordered a vis off of carbonfiberhoods.net and the total was 485 after shipping. I don’t have hood pins and it sits in place just like the factory one. You can get hood pins but if you take your time when you put the hood on and hand tighten the hood screws, then lightly with a wrench it will go as planned. Just remember if you get the hood you gotta get a matching lip!

has anyone ever had the hood fly up???

ive got a carbon hood on mine and ive done over 100mph and i havent had them fly up

Hood pins will prevent from ur hood popping off the latch,…but yet u dont need them,…has anyone even had their hood come off the latch for smashing on the streets,…i know i havent,…there mostly for show too,…

hood pins are as ugly as they are useless

in my opinion

i got a prelude that when driving on the freeway at like 50 mph and up the hood starts to shake as if its going to pop open in my face but it doesnt

i also ran the car at 110 mph and still doesnt pop open even though its not closing correctly or something. im too lazy fix it.

I beleive ViS hoods say “hood pins recommended” on the label as their way of covering their ass if it does fly up. Hood pins are the FARTHEST thing from useless. Maybe useless if you buy cheap tinfoil Autozone pins. If you invest $400-$500 in a hood, why wouldnt you spend that bit extra to make sure your investment is safe?

Google “why you should use hood pins” theres plenty of sites with horror stories. Hood flying up and smashing the windshield, flying up breaking the mounts and hitting a car behind them.

Okay, if your driving at freeway speeds and you hood “shakes” and “is scary” like some people have said, would you not think immediately that you need to secure it? Lighter hoods can pop open easier, and the way the latch is attached to the hood is inferior compared to OEM and can break. Just because you “ran it at over 100 and nothing happened” doesnt mean nothing will ever happen. Think about your safety and the safety of the other people on the road with you.

This thread is full of fail.

A buddy of mine was driving his WRX to Carlisle last year and his VIS hood flew up and smashed his windshiel. He had glass in his eyes and everything. He is now rocking a stock hood and refuses to even consider another C/F, hood pins or not (he didn’t have any at the time). I personaly have a Seibon waiting in the garage. It’s not going on untill my Aerocatch pins come in, and neither is my hatch untill then either. Far from unsightely and very functional. Just be careful. Glass in the eyes is never fun…

it may have been a bit radical for me to say useless
personally, i’d rather not rock the cf hood at all. to each their own thoughs:rockon:

Aerocatch gets teh thumbup, they’re really awesome I’m picking up the locking version, in CF if I can find them… Not sure what I’ll do for the hatch yet tho. Saw some Mugen trunk tiedowns but I’m not sure I want to use them.
