CEL Code 9 D.I.Y. fix.

So I have been driving around for the last couple of months with a CEL code 9(#1 cylinder TDC position sensor). I haven’t fixed it up until this point, because I haven’t had the money to buy a new distributor.

So the other day my brother comes over with an extra distributor for his SOHC D16Y8 motor out of 94 civic(casing was leaking oil) and tells me to “pull the sensors from this one.”

I was a little bit skeptical, so after looking at the distributor for a couple of minutes I notice that sensors and contact points look somewhat similar and decided to do it. since I actually now have the money to buy new one in case, well I fuck this one up:cross:

So lets get started

Here are the steps need to pull the distributor apart.

  1. I unhooked all the wire after figuring out what went where. Then I pulled out the 2 screw that hold in the igniter unit and the 2 screws that hold the first pickup.

  2. flip it over to remove the ring that holds the cam key(don’t know what to call It.) and the pin slides out with a little push. The key slides right off of the shaft along with a black washer on the back.

  3. You then have to flip it back over to the front side and pull the 3 screw that hold the plate to the distributor housing. You should then be able to slide the shaft and plate out of the housing.

  1. This gives you access to the 4 screws that hold down the two other pickup points.

  2. Once everything is disconnected from the housing you need a small flathead to pry the wire grommet out of the housing. Then the wire harness should slide right out.

This is the point where you need to remove the bad distributor for your car and use the same steps to gut the sensors as stated above. Install is just the reverse as taking it apart.

NOTE
One thing to watch for the cam key for my motor(b18a1) was larger in diameter that the key for the d16y8 motor. But the shaft size is the same so just make sure you put the cam key for the motor you’re using back on.

After all was said and done. It took a little more than an hour and a half to complete including timing of the car and taking my time pulling everything apart and putting it back together. Over all not a hard job at all.

The car fired right up. No CEL, and the car no longer sounded like an STI when under 2k rpm. and the only thing I have noticed is different is the length of the wires outside of the distributor are a little bit shorter so I doesn’t reach up to the prongs where the connectors are actually held on to the distributor. Not a problem at all. Almost looks better with it like that anyway:shrug:

Hope this helps someone in need;)

MODS

thanx for moving this i had no clue where to put it.

Nice write-up, i’ll have to give it a shot if I ever throw this code. Oh yeah, thanks for leaving your business card AKA G2IC ad, on my winshield in the sam’s club parking lot, that was my 4dr. I thought it was a flyer at first, then I read it, lol. Thanks for lookin out though.

i wasnt sure i just seen the onepieces. so i figgure what the hell.

Feel free to come wash that thing. it looked like it was deffinatly in need of one:giggle:

Yea she definitely needs at least that to start off with and new paint to finish it, lol.

I tried this last night, and it does work.
i used a d16z6 distributor and took all the sensors out and everything works.
it got rid of my CEL 8 TDC sensor.

I just noticed the pictures are not coming up so fell free to hit me up if they are needed.

problem fixed;)

¢el ¢ode 9

What if you dont want to go through that pro¢ess of doing the repla¢ement?? Do I have to ¢hange the whole distributor to fix that ¢ode problem?? Mines throw the same one and the ¢he¢k engine light ¢omes on when I rev too high sometimes.

im pretty sure your only other option is a new distributor:(

do the donor and patient need to be the same obd? because i have a obd2 d16y7 distributor laying around, and i have a obd1 gsr distributor on my car.

Im gonna say yes, althought im not sure of the distributor differences between odb1 and 2

What about performan¢e??

Well another question ¢omes to mind…will you see your performan¢e improve when you swap the stuff inside the distributor??

im no professional mechanic, but im gonna say no.

OEM is OEM

o, ok. well im guessing that the d16y8 from the 94 civic had all the original obd1 components from the original motor.

cel 9 fix?

Was wondering of anyone knows what that parts is called for when you have to order it? Is is wiring harness assembly?? I take it that its also known as the module or sensors?? I dont know. Please inform me before I order the wrong stuff. Thanks.

in order to buy a new harness, you need to buy a casing with it aswell.

the part number is 06301-PR4-A01

I have a CEL code 9 also and I was wondering if I could fix the problem just by replacing the distributor? And one more question, how do you know if timing is correct and how would you make the timing correct? Thanks. Need help bad.

replacing the distributor is your best option. as for the timing, check the teg tips I belive its in there
