So I have been driving around for the last couple of months with a CEL code 9(#1 cylinder TDC position sensor). I haven’t fixed it up until this point, because I haven’t had the money to buy a new distributor.
So the other day my brother comes over with an extra distributor for his SOHC D16Y8 motor out of 94 civic(casing was leaking oil) and tells me to “pull the sensors from this one.”
I was a little bit skeptical, so after looking at the distributor for a couple of minutes I notice that sensors and contact points look somewhat similar and decided to do it. since I actually now have the money to buy new one in case, well I fuck this one up:cross:
So lets get started
Here are the steps need to pull the distributor apart.
-
I unhooked all the wire after figuring out what went where. Then I pulled out the 2 screw that hold in the igniter unit and the 2 screws that hold the first pickup.
-
flip it over to remove the ring that holds the cam key(don’t know what to call It.) and the pin slides out with a little push. The key slides right off of the shaft along with a black washer on the back.
-
You then have to flip it back over to the front side and pull the 3 screw that hold the plate to the distributor housing. You should then be able to slide the shaft and plate out of the housing.
-
This gives you access to the 4 screws that hold down the two other pickup points.
-
Once everything is disconnected from the housing you need a small flathead to pry the wire grommet out of the housing. Then the wire harness should slide right out.
This is the point where you need to remove the bad distributor for your car and use the same steps to gut the sensors as stated above. Install is just the reverse as taking it apart.
NOTE
One thing to watch for the cam key for my motor(b18a1) was larger in diameter that the key for the d16y8 motor. But the shaft size is the same so just make sure you put the cam key for the motor you’re using back on.
After all was said and done. It took a little more than an hour and a half to complete including timing of the car and taking my time pulling everything apart and putting it back together. Over all not a hard job at all.
The car fired right up. No CEL, and the car no longer sounded like an STI when under 2k rpm. and the only thing I have noticed is different is the length of the wires outside of the distributor are a little bit shorter so I doesn’t reach up to the prongs where the connectors are actually held on to the distributor. Not a problem at all. Almost looks better with it like that anyway:shrug:
Hope this helps someone in need;)
