CEL on but no code

so i drive a 90 auto DA i took a left turn last night and my CEL clicked on so i turned off the car and started it again and it went away…cool. tonight im on my way home and the same thing. i take a turno and it clicks on. so i pull over and install the jumper… nothing. no code. so i continue home get home and put the car in park and just sit. after about 1 1/2 minutes it clicks on. then i notice the idle fluctuating between 1-2k. its driving me crazy. the car doesnt seem to act any different when its on… it actually idles smoother. usually idles at like 500 and vibrates the whole car. i wish there were more symptoms to make it easier but there are really no symptoms other than when its in park the idle fluctuates… i have ruled out a vac leak. 02. all the obvious stuff. could it be my iacv? im tired of it popping off and on . especially while im tryin to sell it. i wish i could geta code from it but it WILL NOT throwone at all. i have tried the jump i have even taken it into a friends shop and he couldnt get it to pick up a code either. at this point i am irritated and ready to just say fuck it and donate the car for a tax write off. any help is appreciated

You have a 90, you don’t need a jumper to read the cel codes. Read it off the ecu like the teg tips say.

^ tried that… nothing. ive even taken it to my friends shop and basically put it on life support… still nothing. the light will come on but it WILL NOT throw a code. no matter what i do i cant get a code out of it.

Wow! Don’t have a good old buddy with a similar vehicle around you could swap ECUs for a test drive? Nothing funny has been done to this car as far a swapping over to OBDx or OBDxx?

no. the ecu itself is fine. everything is fine. it may be the iacv i have no idea. checked for vac. leak… nothing… checked o2… nothing. i have ran through this car almost completely even the wiring… and nothing. it just randomly turns on every couple days… im about to replace the whole fucking intake manifold. lol

Seem like everyones got that horror story. Plenty of “how to clean” episodes, too.

ok so it wont come on unless the car is in park and it has to idl for about 2 minutes… but only if the a/c is off…wtf? i can let it sit in drive and nothin, neautral, nothing. but if i put it in park only with the ac OFF the light will pop on in about 2 minutes… there is no vac leak, i cleaned the iacv, the manifold is fine, the o2 is perfect…wtf!!! lol. im getting frustrated.

bump… anyone have an idea wtf is going on w/ my car? lol. i know its near impossible to diagnose online especially with so very few symptoms but any thoughts or leads are appreciated and welcomed.

I’ll advise you to post in the electrical section, after searching for a while. Plenty of ECU gurus over there. If they have the manual on line here somewhere, I’m sure they have a “no code stored” troubleshooting section.

thanks man. but i THINK i got it. pulled out the iacv and douched it out several times. i didnt even know if the screen was in there until i sprayed it dow… shit was sooo dirty. but now my car idles like it should and shifts way smoother as well. everything is just so smooth. lol.

For future reference, when it turns on…just pull over somewhere and while the car is still running get the code lol.

^ im aware. bu it wouldnt throw one. i tried like hell. took it into a shop after everything else failed and STILL nothing so i was like fuck it… i cant ignore it when its on so throw it in neutral turn it off and turn it back on. proble solved temporarily. lol. dumb i know but id rather that than have to look at it constantly. out of sight out of mind. lol. but i got it solved… thanks everyone

mother fucker!!! i give up. i swear to god i am gonna put a rag in the gas tank and let this fucking car be. i walked into the store to get smokes… come back and fuckin DING!!! CEL is back again. and yet again it WILL NOT THROW A FUCKING CODE. god damnit im so fuckin mad right now. im refraining from putting a fucking dent in this god damn car. someone buy this fucker before i blow it the fuck up

Sorry to hear that the demon code light is back. If I were you I’d take one more shot at letting us help by logging this in the electrical section. I’ve said this before, that there are braniacs in that forum that’ll probably point you right to the problem. I never cease to be amazed at the suggestions that they come up with. Besides, I’d hate for you to waste this car and I’ll bet you a sixpack of your fav it’s minor and will be fixed in the next week. I drive a 92’ auto LS coupe and probably will til it rots out from underneath.

Well this might help you are both driving auto’s when was the last time your egr valve where cleaned…

The most “common cause” of the “check engine” light is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation
(E.G.R.) valve on most Asian vehicles. Although
it is sometimes quite disconcerting to have the
light come on it is usually not harmful to the engine or it’s performance. The E.G.R. valve is
exposed to high temperatures and it can get
“carbon fouled” easily and therefore send a
signal to the Electronic Control Module (E.C.M.)
that there may be a problem (not necessarily
a significant one).
