Cell phone tracking?

Has anyone thought of buying a cell phone (or using an old one) with GPS tracking and activating it with unlimited data plan then hiding it in the car to transmit GPS information and using a free tracking program to track it?

This is of course incase the car gets stolen you can track the car with the cell phone. Supposedly Boost mobile has a data plan for $.35 per day which works out to about $128 per year. I was thinking this would be a good theft recovery system just tie it into the 12 volt with an adapter so it charges all the time.

Thoughts?

been done. from what i remember, you don’t even need the gps thing. run a search here and on the net. i am sure you’ll find something about it.

borrowed this from my local forum.

first off…
if your car gets stolen, i am not sure what you should do. i am not a cop.
i know if my car is missing and i know where it is i’m gonna go there and let the police know my car is there and that i’m going in.
i don’t know all the laws in your area so you might want to check ahead before you go in guns blazing.

ok this is a post a friend of mine made on another forum, so if it says “i, me, or my” it’s not me it’s him.
i have not done this yet, so if you try it and can’t figure it out i can’t help you. i will be doing this as soon as my car is running.
i will have one in my car and my wife’s car.

DO NOT USE THIS TO ILLEGALLY TRACK SOMEONE!!!
you need to realize that this isnt a joke and if you use this software to track someone illegally you WILL go to jail and the JUDGE WILL TOSS THE BOOK AT YOU… YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS ISNT A JOKE…
so if you think your gf is cheating on you dump her… dont use the phone to track her…

the costs get a little confusing so i’m gonna break it down right here.
phone $20 comes with a card that lasts 90 days.
he said after the first 90 days it’s $10 for additional 90 days.

the tracking software is $5.99 or $7.99 a month
so every month you pay that, or if you want you can pay quarterly or yearly
and every 90 days it’s $10 to keep the phone active.

if you have any questions feel free to ask, i probably have the answer. or can get the answer.

oh and i’m not sure if these are current prices, please check the websites for current pricing
i do not work for any of these companies. there are other tracking sites online, but this one has been tested for a year by my friend.

START HIS POST:

go to bestbuy and buy a boost mobile phone. an i425 e or t are the same thing…

open up the phone and activate it VIA THE WEBSITE and make sure you uncheck the box that says wireless web access or w/e make sure you uncheck ANY EXTRA STUFF so you dont get charged for it… the phone should come with a 5 dollar card and that should last you 90 days…
you will need to go to www.accutracking.com and register/sign up…
select the simple app to download to your pc…
sign up on this website and download the software to link your cell phone to your pc…
http://developer.motorola.com/docsto...enjal/openJAL/
you will need a usb to mini usb cable to connect the phone to the pc…
upload the accutracking app from your pc to your phone.
run the app… then log into accutracking.com and it will ask you for your boost mobile number… input it then it will give you a tracker id… input the tracker id into the boost mobile phone and give it a little time to load everything up and voilla you have a working gps system…

there are two plans to choose from on accutracking.com 5.99 basic which only shows where the gps is and where its been… or 7.99 premium which shows where it is… where its been… how fast its been going little things like that…
FIRST MONTH IS FREE!!! it doesnt even need a CC to activate first month and the website does not automatically recharge your cc…

gps in action… here it is showing me parked infront of my house… then 1 minute later pulling into my garage…

you can add a password to the app you can make it run when you open the phone you can set how often you want it to update… mine is set to update every minute…
ive been testing it for the past month and a half…

you can wire up the phone to the cars electrical system so the battery doesnt run out…
personally i have just been running the charger whenever im in the car and stashing the phone when im about to leave the car… thieves can’t steal the car from my garage so i also keep the phone on me at night…
this isnt a permanently attached gps device and if you forget it the day it gets stolen then your out of luck…

it CAN be a permanently attached device but i wouldnt trust it… id like to have peace of mind knowing that its running and reset the phone ATLEAST once a day…

but thats just me

the battery lasts a good 6 hours it will last longer if you set it to send every 2 minutes or every 5 or 10 minutes
this system has worked FLAWLESSLY for the past month… almost 3 thousand miles driving… all logged and tracked… (lol i cant beileve i havent seen a spotted thread for my car yet)

you can safely purge data from the website… (say you go somewhere and dont want anyone to know… you just select the date and time you want it to start… and date and time you want it to end… and ittl delete the data…)

you can also set a fence… so if your car leaves that spot it will text you or email you…
i also think theres an option to alert you when the car moves…
so gmail notify with a gmail account at your work = instant alert that your car is moving…

you can also buy the phones with the software preuploaded on accutracking.com

someone asked me about streetnames and what not… yes it shows everything…
i turned the tracker on as ford rd turned into mcgraw…
