changed cv/axle last night.......feels rough.

i bought a new cv/axle from auto zone and replaced my broken drivers side one last night. driving it around, i noticed that the steering would be a little shakey/rough when accelerating from a stop or turning, but then would go away and drive smooth. one thing i realized after installing the axle, is that i did’nt re-grease the “teeth”. could this cause the problem? will it work itself out with the pre-existing grease?

Be careful with Auto Zone or other “after market” axles. These places have a tendency to give you the wrong axles. if an axle is even slightly longer than it should be, it will cause the problems you are describing. A defective axle could cause the same thing. It’s a CV problem. If the axle is too long, essentially it is “crushing” the CV especially in turns. And to answer your question, no. Not greasing the splines will not cause the problem you are having. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

could there be anything else that would cause this problem aside from the axle itself. for instance, suspension? any bushings or anything i might have damaged? everything was bolted back together correctly.

Did you tighten up the lugnuts correctly? I’m embarrased to say that after changing my brakes I didn’t tighten mine up enough. Luckily I checked em before anything major happened.

yep, sure did.

Damn lugnuts, i thought i had them down pretty tight after changin the axle, one day i hop out of my car and notice that a lug is missing! 2 others were loose, and some loose on the other side. I was so happy nothin happened, i finally picked up a torque wrench and tightened those suckers on there to stock specs. Only problem is i’m runnin on 3 lugs on one side until honda get some more in :(. I’m too cheap to buy 16 new lugs, and i don’t wanna mismatch.

Gettin back on subject, maybe try reinstalling the axle and see if you notice anything while you’re doing it. Did you install the spindle nut to stock settings? You gotta have a torque wrench for that one for sure, it’s like at 134 lbs. If everything checks out, i dunno if a busted wheel bearing would cause this, maybe you need an alignment or your wheels balanced. If all else fails, take it to a mechanic, better to pay $50 - $100 now than a bunch more later if this causes an accident.

i’ll try reinstalling it, but are you sure it’s 134 lbs of torque?

teg 91-00 f+r spindle nuts torque is 134ft/lbs quick question though is your inner cv properly seated in diff also when seating it do not pull shaft out to far or bearings may pop or misaline+be rough in inner cv joint

u just got new axles right…they feel rough coz its never been used…wait awhile then it’ll be smooth again…i got the same rebuild axles…felt rough after install…after few weeks its fine…
