Chattering / Squeeling noise

Ok so while idleing and slow speeds my car makes a chatter / squeealing noise for about 5 seconds. But it cycles on and off. 5 seconds squealing, 5 seconds not, 5 seconds squealing. The thing is it doesn’t make the noise when the car is stopped, making hard for me to pin point what it is.

The only time i got it to make the nosie with the engine off, is when i stalled the car and it kept squealing. I quickly opened the hood and noticed it was coming from the passenger side near the firewall. Right around the tranny area i think.

anyways i have a sound clip of it, but i have no idea how to upload it. someone please help, its getting annoying.

if your car has ABS, my best guess is the ABS control module is fritzing out.
when i had ABS, everytime i started my car or accelerated quickly i got this r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r sound from the passenger side firewall.

you can either have the unit inspected, or do what i did and find an open parking lot and drive around until the sound starts and then allow the ABS to actually work (slam on the brakes) and see if it stops or get worse.

my guess is that the ABS units dont normally get used so they start to act up just sitting there for years at a time. before i went non-abs i had to do this about 3 times a year. i also noticed that occasionally while the module was chattering, the ABS system didnt actually work. which could be dangerous if youre not expecting it on a wet road. i say go out and give the brakes a few good jabs while its squealing, try to force it back into working order.

or you could replace the ABS module, which used ones are normally going to be trash or almost trash, and new ones are like 250 dollars.

if i were you, and this ghetto-rig doesnt fix it, go non-abs. in cars as light as ours its real easy to actually stop the car better than an ABS system can. non-ABS is great because it takes away a lot of very touchy, unreliable parts from a very important safety measure. theres a guy selling non-abs conversion on here for cheap.

my car makes the same exact noise…thought it was distributor for the longest time but narrowed it down to the clutch. god its annoying.

if your car is ideling and the clutch is out is it chattering if it is then push the clutch in and if it stops its just clutch chatter witch is normal to a point and the squeeling might be the throw put bearing or the flywheel bearring

yeah i was thinking the throw out bearing maybe. cuz after about a half hour of driving the shifting becomes really stiff.

im starting to think its my ABS really. cause it only happens when im idleing or parking lot speeds. and it doesn’t matter weather my clutch is in gear or not.

how hard is the non abs conversion to do?

depends how far you want to go with it. do you want to remove all the modules/reservoirs/lines etc? or just deactivate it and turn the light off? i just took the abs computer out on my old beater teg and all problems solved. no more abs, no abs light on in cluster.

even thought this would have been my first guess, this would only happen while your breaking, the OP made it sound as if this is happening during acceleration

the speedo cable would be my next guess, they usualy make an odd noise at low speeds but go away as speeds increase and its plugs into the trany on the passenger side close to the fire wall.

yeah you are right. theres nothing wrong with my braking. And the noise happens when i accelerate. how do i check the speedo cable?

likewise how do i upload a sound clip? i have a clip from the inside of my car.

youtube, photobucket, vimeo… there’s a bunch of sites you can upload your video to.

i recorded it as a voice note from my phone and youtube doesn’t recognize the codec. i’ll record a video next time.

ok heres a link to the video: sorry this is the best i can do

if you listen to it, you can hear the chattering noise. It usually happens in 2 second intervals. 2 seconds on 2 seconds off. Heres the weird thing, when im driving and its making that noise. if i turn the key to the crank position, the noise stops. when i put the key back to on, it starts making the noise again.

bump. this is driving me nuts.

did you ever get it fixed by the way? im having the same issue, im thinking its the abs system.
