cheap way to save your exhaust from RUST

everyone esp. up in the north part of the country and canada hates it when a hole forms in the exhaust due to rust from winter driving. i have found a awsome way to save your piping from this. i have needed to repair my exhaust 3times in the last 3years due to rust, basiclly every spring after winter. and well that got kinda tiring and cost consuming.

i figured a logical solution would be painting the exhaust therefor no rust, but doing this may cost a little bit everyyear due to the paint getting chipped or scrapped off but i just figure it will still be cheaper than 30 here 40 there at the exhaust shop everyyear. i have tried 3 different paints and the 3rd one has worked out awsome for me. the first i tried was the Engine paint from Wal-Mart back in the auto section. its only rated at 500 degrees and it burned off within 2 days, however this may have been a good thing because it burned everything off of the pipe and left it looking brand new. so that made the “better paint” go on smoother. cant remember what the second was it was like 800 degrees still wasnt enough and burned off, again leaving my pipe spotless.

well since winter is coming on pretty quickly this year and i have access to several lifts at school i figured i would give itone more try at the paint. this time i went to Menards and found some 1200degree paint, it is Rusto-Oleum Specialty HIGH HEAT paint for grills, wood stoves, radiators, and more, it comes in a green can with yellow/orange logos on it. there was like 3 colors i picked the black, to be exact it is Bar-B-Q Black, its basicly flatblack. this paint goes on super smooth and dries in under 15minutes to the touch

pics are in the next post

here are the pics

Heres the Good paint, it can be found at menards for around $4

heres the pipes painted

and i did the same to the muffler earlier this summer and here is how it came out from the first bend past the rear LCA to the muffler it doesnt get hot enough to burn the paint off if you use the walmart kind or a lower heat paint, however i did touch it up with the 1200degree paint

now when you take into consideration to fix a section of pipe at a muffler shop can cost anywhere from $10-$40(depending on pipe size and length) and 1 can of this paint was just under $4 at menards even if you do have to repaint once a year you still come out ahead

looks nice, another good way, if you are going to put your car away for a while, is to spray storage oil in your intake (without filter on) until you see it come out the exhaust. then just turn the car off, and leave it. that way when you start your car back up, no water in exhaust, no rust, and engine will be nicely lubricated. that shit’s sticky and thick, and will just burn off after a few km when you reuse it!

 thanks for adding that to it, one of my teachers at school has talked about doing that before.

that stuff’s tha shiznat! not too expensive either, totally worth it! we should have product reviews on this site and give certain products a number of start out of 5 to give people ideas of how good something is. iwould give storage oil a 6 of 5 :inlove:

i have some done on my muffler piping…
