Check Engine Light and Highway Driving

When I drive on the highway (65mph+) in the summer (doesn’t happen in the winter), my check engine light comes on after roughly an hour of driving. If I pull off the highway and turn the car off and start it up again, the light does not come on unless I drive for another 30 to 60 minutes. My fluids all appear to be fine, but my radiator’s “extra fluid container” appears low. My temperature (or is it pressure gauge) in the cabin says at the normal level. I just found out about checking the ECU and plan to do this soon…nonetheless, anyone experience this???

90-91 or 92-93?

Either way check the ecu code reading once it happens and then get back to us we can help.

  1. Will I be able to check the code now? Or do I have to wait for the light to come on, pull over, turn the engine off, turn the key to “on”, then check code?

I believe you have to wait til it comes on first then pull over and check the readings. Also in the tegtips if u want to check there for the ecu codes maybe print it out and while ur out there u can check it also.

You mention if u turn off the car and start it up again the light wont be there so maybe try to just turn it off but the keys on the on position and then check.

When the check engine comes on do u feel anything wrong with the car Like lost of power cant accel? Any slight changes in rpm or exhaust sound etc? If u want once it comes on try to gas the pedal more and see if u get problems if so it can mean its also related somehow to the check light problem.

The cel code is stored in the ecu until you reset it.

Oh ok thanks for clearing that up. Anyhow keep us inform

Okay. I felt like I would break my neck trying to read the code, but I got it. It is code 43. According to the Teg Tips, that means “43 - Fuel Supply System”. I’m gonna do some searching and hopefully find some information.

The whole thing seems strange since it only comes on when driving on the highway for extended periods of time (or maybe it has nothing to do with the highway speeds and just driving for hours on end). Also, I don’t think it ever lights up in winter, just summer (last summer and this summer).

Just searched…I think I will try and replace my fuel filter before trying the o2 sensor. Anyone have pics on replacing a fuel filter. I have never done it before…

my car does the same thing, its only after driving for a bit on the freeway and when you shut the car off and start it again the lights gone. Never tried to read the code while doing 75 down the freeway though, sounds a bit too dangerous to me.

As for the fuel filter, its pretty straight foward. the only tough part is loosening those dam bolts they are a real pain in the ass. Be sure to relieve the pressure out of the fuel line first!

Ummm why would you need to read the code while you are driving? :bang:

If it comes and goes away, it’ll be stored in the ecu until it is reset.

Yeah…the code stays there to read later. My engine light came on more than a week ago, and I just checked it today while it was in the parking lot.

i’ve tried to check it after i got off the freeway, I turn the car off, pull back the carpet, turn the car on and nothin. no cel, no flashing light on the ecu, nothing at all. I dont do much freeway driving so im not really worried about it, engine swap comes this winter anyway.

Well you cant check it with the car off. It has to at least be in the on position, or with the car running to check for codes.

I think he did mention it in his post “I turn the car off, pull back the carpet, turn the car on and nothin.”

Oh. I didnt see that haha. Well the next time it happens, just pull off and check it before you shut the car off?

yeah, thats what i did this time, and i’m the lucky winner of code 43 also. guessing its the o2 sensor after searching code 43.

uh isnt code 43 = 43 - Fuel Supply System? In the tegtips under ecu codes it reads that a 41 is 02 sensor and a 43 is fuel supply system.

Majority of the time cel 43 goes away when o2 sensor is replaced. Search on it.
