I noticed that my ciggy lighter is always on (even with the key not in ignition)
Example : My radar detector can be turned on without me having a key in the ignition.
Is this normal?
The reason i ask is in my past experiences with cars, the ciggy lighter would only be ‘activated’ if you turn the key to ACC at least.
Originally posted by texnteg yes it is normal, all honda’s are like that.
No, that is not right. When you turn your car off your cigarette lighter should turn off with it.
You have one of two problems. Either there is a large current draw that is not allowing your cigarette lighter to turn off when the car is turned off or it has been rewired to be like that.
The only time that I have ever had mine stay on when turning the car off is when I had a 1,000,000 candle power light plugged into it with my radar detector. It was just such a large draw of current that it kept pulling current from the battery…
i still disagree… my family has 3 honda products (3.2tl, civic, integra) and we usually charge our cell phone at night with the car turned off. the same thing with my buddies cr-v and his pop’s rsx. but, i don’t want to get into an arguement. just, from my experiences it is normal. and a something that has a small power draw such as cell phone or radar detector isn’t a bad thing.

Your dads rsx? uhh i have an rsx and my cig. lighter doents work unless the key is at the II spot. My old ls worked without the key tho and so did my friends ls…so who knows???
mines like that too, i know alot of G2’s where the cigarette ligher works with the car off. so i dont’ think its a problem. but if you really want an acurate answer, try calling the dealer or check the electrical wiring diagram in the helms.
maybe this is another subtle difference between CDN/JDM vs. USDM products?? I agree that a good look at the schematics will tell all (I will look tomorrow). Anyway, if it pleases the press, I have a '93 RS (CDN model) that has IGN switched power to the lighter. As far as I can tell, the cig. lighter has a relay that’s switched when the IGN is on (i.e. [position II acc).
My old 1500 Civic ('86) also had ignition switched power to the lighter… also CDN model though…
How many of you have CDN or JDM tegs that will power the cig. lighter circuit directly from the battery without the key in?
my dad doesn’t have an rsx, my buddies’ dad does… hell, my dad’s car has a cigarette lighter for cigs only, it can’t be used as a powerpoint. another difference in the technology advances from a 1968 american muscle car to early 90’s japanese!!!

sorry my teg isn’t JDM, its still USDM, no matter what i can do to it. how are the canadian models the same as JDM? other then kph on the speedo?
Wow, ok so nothing really conclusive can be gathered from this.
I got my car used, so i dont know if the prev. owner rewired it. I prefer it to be off when the car is off, simply because i dont like the fact that its drawing current w/o the battery being charged. Granted, its a small current, but still.

I didn’t mean that they were the same just that there were some similarities… Let me think… auto wash and wipe when pulling the wiper switch ‘back’. I believe that both the reserviors for wiper fluid are larger (will nearly hold a whole 4L (or 3.78L jug)). Also… manual seat belts and yes… the cluster… I was talking more in terms of the cig. lighter and other electronic circuitry…
I’ve got a JDM XSi and the power is always on even when the ignition is off - but most of my friends tegs shut down the cigarette lighter when you switch off.
Still mine is wired wierd - the radio only turns on when the ignition is switched to On, not Acc
you know I think it would be convenient for the cigarette plug to work when the car is off. I could charge my dead cell when I am at work or shopping. Can anyone tell us an easy way to do this? Which wire could pull current with the ignition off?
I have a 90GS and the cigerette lighter has power whether the car is on or not. My 88 CRX was like that too. But I have to agree it is nice so that I can chrage my cell phone up. As for the radar detector, just hardwire it your electrical system. That way it will turn on and off with the car and you can hide that unsightly wire.
