cleaning fuel injectors

db2-rb1

ok, for the injectors, i was thinking of haveing one wire to the - of the battery and then have the wire to the + for like a sec. you know, like i’m just turinging it on for a second, like a cheap on and off switch. Does this sound right. If not how do i keep this cycle thing going?

also what performance did you get out of it. I once did a injector cleaner at my HS autoshop and i hooked up a can of cleaner straight to the injectors and turned on the car without fuel. do you think i should just do this instead.

Marc can verify this, but a second is too long. Ideally, you’d want a push button switch that will release to the off position as soon as you let go of the button. An on/off switch would require twice the time to turn it off as a momentary one would and if you get a slider on/off switch, that would even require you to use two hands to operate. Remember, the pulse you give to activate the injector should be very, very short, mimicking what the ECU would dish out. I’d say ½ a second for every 5 or so would be a safe duty cycle.

here’s an idea…

why not connect a 12V flasher in series with the powersource in order to cycle the pulses for you? If timing needed to be really tight, you could crack open the plastic casing on the flasher and drop in a different value resitor…

If you guys try this tuna sandwich method, please let us know exactly how it turs out…

Someone should make a small kit and patent the bastard…

So, how many injectors are on our engines? I don’t know but I did notice the price of an injector is like $60 plus shipping at at least one online parts place.

4 cylinders = 4 injectors.

i think brakemasters charges something like $30 to clean all 4… anybody try them? i’m sure it’s not as good as RC, but might be worth $30! someone try it, and let me know, k?

good tip, i had a question about the cycle and battery thing, please explain that again about turning it on and off. From what i’m getting, i just put the injector in the stuff and hook up the + and the - to the injector for a sec for 10 mins?

love the tuna

Maybe I am just thinking out loud but I think this can be done safely without any 555 timers, ICs, etc. How about a simple SPST switch that actuates a 12V relay that drives an automotve flasher… 12V from the flasher to the hot side of the injector and ground the other side at the relay. You could always get one of those riced-out flashers that have the modified resistor so that the pulse is even less-severe. I think I’m on to something here… Any support for this idea??

andrew…i think the flasher idea is great…i was thinkin the same thing as i was reading through the thread… but i dont see whats wrong with the fuel additives to clean the injectors

i had an 81 chevy citation a while back with very dirty injectors and poor acceleration. after i added the stuff i guess it washed a bunch of junk around and clogged them more cause it kept stalling. after i got it going i just floored it on a 90 mile trip (top speed 85mph…haha) there and back. i was still getting a lot of hesitation so i think i did one more tank with additive and at some point during that tank, it just started running really smooth. eventually the junk will break up and get exhausted out…get some additive bottles and go on a trip! :stuck_out_tongue: come to think of it…that car was carbeurated…uhhh…i still think it works tho. at least try it before taking them apart…the stuff is pretty cheap

oh and i also read something about revving to 4k and pinching off a hose between the intake and pressure regulator(?) to give a high pressure shot to the injectors to clean them. anyone hear of this? i probably read it on here somewhere

well, the problem with that stuff is it doesn’t always clean the injectors, but it cleans the dirt from the bottom of your fuel tank and then will sometimes clog your injectors even more.

nobody mentioned new o-rings and cushions? i also dipped the heads in simple green and wiped it off but i doubt it helped as much as the new rings.

I’ve heard that this stuff called BG44K works good, it is a fuel additive that you can buy at some dealers or off the internet, they say it’s similar to Chevron’s Techron, just better. Just my thoughts.
