cleaning fuel injectors

Well I thought that my valves were ticking, but to find out it is my fuel injectors. What can I do (cheapest way) to make them quieter or clean them? I was thinking about the RC engineering thing, but thats a grip of money to have them cleaned. Let me know thanks!

i th ink u could spray them with brake cleaner, tat should do the trick, but BEFORE DOING THIS!!! check with the other members!!!

Yes, I’d like to know too…

Is there a way I could just pull them off and clean them up with out doing damage to them? Any products I could spray them with?, any thought on brake cleaner?

i had napa do mine but i don’t think thst every one has a cleaner, they do it for free to get business. i think that the brake clean would either swell or dry rot the o ring seal so take them off if you try it , all you have to do is take the fuek rail off and gently wiggle and twist them out. try not to tear the seals though

I would think brake cleaner would hurt it somehow. So napa cleaned them for you for free?? So I take them off my car and just take them to napa I suppose??

Before you pull them off, try running some fuel injector cleaner through them first. You can buy it at pretty much any automotive store. Just put it in when you fill up next time. I recommend doing this periodically even if you aren’t having problems.

I usually use the fuel injector cleaners that you add to your tank cuz I really don’t want to deal with cleaning the injectors…hmm, maybe I’ll just send them in to RC

Ask DB2-R81. A while ago he posted some ingenius way of cleaning fuel injectors on the Endyn board.

i believe that the way RC does it is some kind of sonic bath. that breaks up the crap that gets inside.
kinda like what hospitals do for patients with gall stones.

i dont like fuel injector cleaner that you add to your tank, it breaks all the crap loose from your tank and that stuff just clogs your injectors worse.

i’m not sure the cost of getting them cleaned by RC, but thats the way i’d go,
i dont know about napa or other places. when i used to live in southern cali, i took them to a performance shop(mech tech) and they sent them out somewhere, not sure where to tho. it cost me like $27 per injector. but that was back in 1994 so i’m sure costs are different.

Marc posted his method here too … let us have it Marc!

If someone could post the way to clean from the endyn or whereever board that would b great!

Marc’s method of cleaning fuel injectors involves removing them from the fuel rail, and having them suspending in a tin can half filled with injector cleaner concentrate, like Techron that you can obtain at Chevron. Then while sitting in the cleaner, you can add 12V to the injector terminals to cycle the actuators and thus cleaning them thoroughly out.

It’s important not to hold the injectors open for longer than a second at a time, otherwise you will burn out the actuators in them since they were not made for that kind of duty cycle. Ten minutes and your injectors should be clean.

Thats sounds simple enough and I have tons of fuel injector cleaner gas additives.

should I submerge the whole injector in the cleaner or just part of it??

When taking out the injectors from the car, I just need to remove the fuel rail and then pull of the injectors?? Can someone enlighten me on this step by step?

Thanks again and hopefully my car will run better, ie smoother idle and quieter engine, when I do this. After I do this I can see if the valves are really ticking or not too.

try using that NOS fuel injector cleaner from autozone. it’s some good ****

I’ve bought that stuff before for my car. I didn’t think it did anything. Just basically buying the brand name when some other cheap stuff does the same. And I got both kinds. The blue and red bottle.

I have a few different brands…maybe I’ll just mix them together to get a better affect

Injector Cleaning

Injector Cleaning

The least expensive method I use for cleaning injectors is to go to your local drug store and pick up a dental ultrasonic cleaner under $30.00 or borrow moms jewellery ultrasonic cleaner, she will still love you. Go to Chevron and purchase a bottle of Techrolene (SP). Go by the grocery store and purchase a can of tuna, lettuce, jar of mayo and some cheap white Wonder bread. Fill the ultrasonic cleaner with the solvent to a level that will only submerge the tips of the injectors, up to the normal position of the sealing O-ring. Take a break, toast up the bread and make up a tuna sandwich. Use the cleaned out tuna can and punch four holes in the bottom to stand your injectors in. Place the can holding the injectors in the bottom of the ultrasonic cleaner; do not submerge the electrical connections. Turn the cleaner on; you can leave the injectors soaking 10 to 15 min, to soften stubborn deposits before power cycling. Pulse, cycle the injectors by connecting the injectors electrical connection to a 12-volt DC power source, less than 2 amps or even a small 9-volt transistor radio battery and cycle the power on and off. Like Ive stated it is very important to not let the current run through the injector solenoid coil more than a short period, should be cycled on no more than a second, use an inline switch or you will over heat the coil and ruin the injector. Not required but you electrical and pluming guys can use a switching IC for cycling and a fuel pump to flow cleaner through the injectors. Cleaning time 5-8 min. If you need more details let me know!

I will do this ASAP. I smell a teg tip! I just need to go buy a ultrasonic cleaner thing now. Maybe 2morrow. Maybe I’ll look on ebay.

So did your injectors get quieter after you cleaned them? Any significant improvment of any kind? Get better gas mileage too?

I’m hoping after I do this to get a smoother idle and quieter engine bay. Then I can see if still my valves need to b replaced r not.

good tip, i had a question about the cycle and battery thing, please explain that again about turning it on and off. From what i’m getting, i just put the injector in the stuff and hook up the + and the - to the injector for a sec for 10 mins?

love the tuna

Hey Lobuck,

You will ruin the injector if you just hook a power supply to the injector. What you need to do is have some means of turning the power on and off going to the injector to simulating the conditions it sees while in the car. The wire coil inside the injector can only withstand being powered up for short time periods, in the car the ECU pulses the current being sent to the injectors.

Hey Rcnacura,

Your injectors will not get quieter but you should see better mileage and smoother idle if your injectors are dirty before cleaning.
