Clunk Clunk Clunk noise while turning in gear only

Sorry for flooding the forums latley, this transmission swap is really giving me headache’s (JDM Y1 with LSD),

Now that I finally got her running (with no reverse gear :bawl: ), when ever I turn while in gear, I get this repetitive clunk clunk clunk noise that continues until the wheel is straight again. While turning with the clutch in (not in gear), there is no noise.

Any idea’s? I was thinking axle’s, but I really have no idea

Cv axle

From what you describe it definitely sounds like a CV joint failure. also know as a Constant-velocity joint. Typical they wear out due to a torn boot around the end of the axle shaft but can just fail from normal wear and tear. Usually this is the breaking point on an axle and is the weakest link of the axle. Once clicking starts you will need to replace the axle, luckily axles are relatively inexpensive and are somewhat easy to replace. Here is a video of what your probably hearing:

Hope this helps determine you CLUNKY CLUNK!

hey man, why dont you have a reverse gear?? maybe your transmission is falling apart? lol… hope its nothing major… just make sure your axle is fully seated to the transmission. and what he said.

Yeah it sucks, I must of done something wrong while putting everything back… I’ve taken the transmission out and will be taking it to a transmission shop for the pro’s to fix it.

In the mean time, I put my LS back in, and all the noises are gone, leading me to believe that the CV’s and axle’s are fine

Cv joints…change axle whichever side its being heard from
