I installed a new clutch and flywheel. exedy stage 1 and fidanza 7.5 lb flywheel. the clutch cable is free of any kinks and binds. I adjusted it as loose as possible but it is still extremely tight. any ideas? I can shift through gears just fine and there is no slippage or any other problems. this is all under 4k rpm of course because I’m still in the break-in process. what can cause the cable to be so tight? did I tighten any specific bolt too much or is it anything to do with the pressure plate or flywheel installation? I don’t want the cable to snap on me nor do I want to be burning the clutch and risk glazing it.
When you put the car in gear and start to raise the clutch pedal, when does the clutch start to grab? Does it grab when you barely start to lift the clutch pedal or in the middle or does it grab when you are almost all the way off the clutch pedal. Do you have any free play at the end of the pedal movement?
There are a few things to consider, the pressure plate you installed has alittle more torque capacity, which translates to a stiffer clutch pedal (takes more effort to press). Another thing is the clutch cable itself. It could be routed incorrectly, installed at the linkage incorrectly, or the cable itself could be in need of replacement.
As long as the clutch engages at the proper point in the pedal travel, I don’t thing any damage is occurring. If your shifting smoothly, then the clutch is disengaging properly. And if your not slipping, then it should be engaging properly, all should be well.
I agreed with Sam92Teg and I am sure its the pressure plate being more stiffer then oem.
It makes sense. I don’t know about you since you been riding on oem perhaps you’re used to the soft feel but now its sturdy and stiff yea maybe a lil too hard on your behalf but all aftermarkets clutch pressure plates etc are always a lil stiffer by its stages. Where did you buy your package from and did u buy it seperate then where. I also notice sometimes people buy the wrong pressure plate for their setup for a stage 1 or stage 2 where it get too stiff etc.
Either way it could just be that get use to it?
the pedal stiffness is not bothering me. it seems like the clutch is engaging at just the right spot which is somewhere towards the middle of the travel of the pedal. there is a little play like there’s supposed to be at the pedal. my friend said maybe it could be engaging a little lower but thats not a major issue. my issue is that the physical cable in the engine bay is very stiff. the wire has no play to it. like i said, everything works perfectly, im just worried that the cable is under too much tension. i bought the package from ebay. a 100% feedback guy. the clutch came with the pressure plate and all in one box. it all looked legit to me and the guy has sold many clutches. my friend who helped with the install had the exact same clutch setup and everything looked right to him.
on a different note, while my car is idling, theres some sort of noise as if the flywheel is touching something. my friend said to remove the dust cover that covers the flywheel where the tranny arms are on the bottom but i really doubt that the flywheel is touching that cover. i was considering the possibility of the clutch cable being so tight that the clutch isnt being released all the way and its touching the flywheel while i have the clutch pedal fully released at idle.
edit: sam92teg, i am shifting smoothly although first gear is sometimes a little tricky. the smile on my face was priceless when i started driving with the new clutch. it shifted smoother than any car i’ve ever driven. i feel like its so smooth that something is wrong. i have poly shifter bushings in there and a b&m regular short shifter (no bends).
How does it feel with the 7.5lbs? ups and down side? I heard that the take off from ded stop is not great but while moving its awesome? I am planning for a 12-12.5lbs. i Plan to grind down my crank pully also to 2.5 lbs alt belt one…that should be good for better pick up and acceleration
I was wondering the same as RiccyLSR. I’m gettin an exedy stage 1 and 7.5lbs flywheel in about a month.
i adjust to anything quickly so i dont really notice it. you do have to rev a little higher for taking off from a dead stop but you can most definitely take off smoothly so your woman doesnt complain in the passenger seat. i’ll let you know whats up once im able to start banging gears on this baby. now BACK TO MY QUESTION. HELP PLEASE?
probably just the fact that its a performance presure plate and because its mechanicaly linked to your foot(cable) it is noticably stiffer!! if you were running a hydro tranny it wouldn’t be so noticable!!!
As to the “flywheel chatter” as it is referred to as by many in the automotive field it is verry common with lightweight flywheels in your case very lightweight!! so i wouldnt worry about it!!!
I ran the exedy stage1 organic clutch in my first and still run it in my current integra. It is stiffer! what you need to becareful of is a notchy feeling!!! or if the clutch suddenly dosent return !! what happened to me on my first integra which was a 90 GS was the input shaft bearing was starting to go but i didnt know so i pulled my tranny out a matter of 3 times and replaced that u shaped spring each time before i realized and got my hands on a 92 GSR tranny!! good luck but i doubt youll need it PS I went with a exedy Prolite flywheel and it is sweet!!
oh yea dont forget to tighten back to spec your cable
“oh yea dont forget to tighten back to spec your cable” THAT IS THE FREAKING PROBLEM. i am in no way coming off as offensive because i do appreciate the information about the flywheel which makes me feel much better. however, the cable is adjusted ALL the way loose and there it just cannot be adjusted. its super tight. it wont loosen any more and it is absolutely impossible to tighten it more. i know the clutch pedal is supposed to be stiffer. my first db1 had an insanely stiff clutch pedal and it was fine. no issues with that. oh, and so far, i freakin love this flywheel
bump for some help. is it possible that overtorqing the pressure plate can cause the tranny arm to not travel high enough for the clutch cable to be adjusted properly?
Could it be that the cable was routed differently, meaning the brackets holding the cable are not in their proper places.
no sir. the cable is routed properly
i have the same problem. brand new clutch and pressure plate. If i figure it out ill let you know
edit: just saw that its a pretty old post… did you figure it out?
