Clutch Doesn't Disengage - Searched

I changed the engine in my car recently, and it’s now all ready to drive. Went to put it in reverse and it grinded and died. It also won’t go into any of the forward gears.

My thought is that before I installed the transmission, I changed to a slightly more heavy duty pressure plate. But when I went to attach the bracket to the transmission, it seemed too tight from where it was set at from the factory, so I threaded it more upwards to the top. Would that be my problem? Do I need to thread the mounting point down to where it was before? Because it engaged just fine before, throwout bearing was fine then, don’t see why it would have changed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I had this problem less than a week ago, in the same circumstance. Freshly swapped motor and new trans/clutch/pressure plate, and my clutch wouldnt disengage.

Give this a try… With the motor turned OFF, put the trans in first gear. Go outside the car, and pull the arm on the transmission UP as hard as you can. While its pulled up, try to roll the car backward or forward. If it rolls and the tranny doesn’t stop the car, then you know your clutch is working correctly. In that case, it will be your cable that is the culprit. Once the cable gets old, it will stretch and no longer be strong enough to push the pressure plate in and disengage the clutch.

But, all of this is assuming that the tranny shifts well when the car is off, it goes through all the gears fine etc. If the tranny doesn’t shift well when the car is off, then you have yourself an internal transmission problem.

After I got a new cable, it solved the problem I was having.

I realize it will probably be a bitch-and-a-half to pull the arm on the tranny up, but if you can do it, it will tell you what the problem is.

Hope this helped bro, keep us posted on what happens.

Went out and tried what I thought the problem was. I unbolted the 12mm bolts that hold the bracket to the transmission, and threaded the plastic nut thingy (lol) down a good ways to about where it was before I messed with it, and VOILA! Shifted right into reverse, engaged, just fine. =D

Took it for it’s first drive in SEVEN YEARS! :excite: Smoking like a bastard though, will have to either drive it for a long time to get all the built up oil out of there, or just change out the exhaust. I’ll probably go with the latter.

But damn is this thing STIFF! But that’s what I get for using a near 2000lb clutch… heh.
