Clutch Install Pics

I’ve never done a clutch install so I learned a ton. Replacing the clutch is no easy task but Dan is a true Guru and helped me get through it in no time! I also want to thank Amerikan for bailing me out w/ that flywheel. Much thanks.

I used the ACT extreme PP w/ full-faced organic street disc and the Fidanza 7.5lb flywheel. The reason I used the extreme PP is because I plan on boosting one day and feel this set-up will be the most comfortable for daily use and will still hold 300+HP/ftlb.

I’m going to add a post in the ‘product review’ forum with my impressions of these products. So try to save your product related questions for those posts. I’ll try to get those up later tonight.

For those (like me) who don’t know what I clutch install entails I’m going to post a ton of pics w/ narration:)

There are quite a few bolts that need to be removed from the engine bay area. So it is neccessary to pull out the battery, intake, & starter to get at these bolts on the tranny and tranny mounts.

Passenger side axle and driver side ‘intermediate’ shaft need to be removed.

Special ball-joint seperater tool

Time to unbolt the tranny

Flywheel comparison

Flywheel bolted on

Clutch disc in place

pressure plate bolted on

Now it’s time to put the tranny back on and put the car back together.

I wish I took some pics of the inner side of the tranny that faces the clutch assembly. That would help explain how the clutch actually works a little better. I’m trying to visualize it right now and am failing. If anyone has that pic please post it!

Oh, here are my favorite pics. I thought I’d show you the Guru’s tool set. Very impressive!

cool… i’ll buy it off you. no rush… it’s not like i’ll be installing it for a while.

Sweet pics! I’m gonna be doing the same when I start my auto/manual swap. Just out of curiousity, what do you use to remove the flywheel bolts (are they just 12 point bolt heads or something more exotic?) and how do you hold the flywheel to remove the bolts? I noticed in the helms they show a toothed flywheel stop thing that bolts down to keep the flywheel from rotating, but what did you guys use? Any trick to it? TIA, and damn, I wish I was that organized :stuck_out_tongue:

archive this I always love seeing works like that documented so well. Helps to have some picture reference for the DIYer. Did Dan have on his monogrammed work outfit?

Looking good, Leif…
Hey, those koni’s look pretty new…
I am kinda glad I didnt make it down for that install. I dont want to get burnt out on doing tranny work just yet…
You forgot to get the pictures of all the tools that are in the box. That is where Dan keeps the other half of his tools…

correct, i can’t remember what size they are but i do know for sure its a 12point socket.
you’ll need a flywheel tool to hold it in place. try Napa i thought i saw one there once.

Good question! I believe the flywheel bolts are simply 12 point bolt heads. If I’m wrong I’m sure someone will correct me. But I believe that is what Dan said and I don’t recall any special tool for those.

Dan has a special too that holds the flywheel to prevent it from turning. It’s hard to explain but it’s basically a bar w/ a couple teet on it and it makes friction on the flywheel. It’s a pain to use and can slip off and kill you! hehe. I wish I took some pictures of it.

And in the correct order otherwise you can warp the flywheel!

Yep, just another reason to get the helms manual. I consider it my personal bible…

Isn’t that a clutch alignment tool? I believe you get one when you buy the whole clutch kit. Good pics Leif. Are you going to have some background music as well as the narration? TOOL seems so appropriate:p

Ummm, I guess ‘narration’ isn’t quite the right word. A ‘description’ or a ‘recitation’ if you will:) Is that better?

I think Dan and I listened to some Tool on his shop radio:) Good times…

My clutch came some plastic tool that Dan didn’t use. Is that what this is? The heavy duty version?

Leif

Damn, I thought you were going to go all out like the G2 slide show. I wish you’d do more of those:D

That’s a good idea. Maybe if I have some spare time:)

Leif

When I grow up I want a garage like that  Nice pics Leif, your pics are really helpful for understanding things.

Did you paint Dan’s bench with leftover paint from your Teg?
