Clutch pedal adjustments

I just test drove a 1990 integra, which I love, and I think I’m going to buy it. There’s just one problem… the clutch pedal is extremely tight and you have to work your leg hard to move it. In addition to this, the clutch doesn’t engage/disengage until you get near the top of its range of motion… Is there any way I can adjust these???

I’d also like to know.

Tegs are normally like that because they use a cable transmission. Buy a Haynes manual to adjust the engagement height of the clutch. In terms of firmness, you’ll have to live with that. It’s like buying a car with power steering or without. And using a cable tranny is like working without power steering. When I get home tonight, I’ll pull up the Haynes manual and describe you how to do it.

Okay, well I guess I could live with it, but my dad has an '87 integra and the clutch isn’t nearly as stiff… is that set up the same way? do all of the 2nd generation integras have cable transmissions?

Yes, all G2’s have cable transmissions as do the G1 Integra’s. You hafta live with the pressure, but you can adjust the friction point. At the trans. there’s a black grooved knob at the end of the clutch cable. Just turn it one way to set the friction point lower and turn it the other to set it higher. I can’t remember which is which but a couple turns and testing it will tell ya.

Here is a crappy picture of it. Thanks Jason, I thought thats what it was, but I wasn’t sure.

there should be 2-2 1/2" inches of freeplay at the pedal to make sure the clutch will engauge, you cannot just put it where you want it

I had that problem, so I adjusted. But when I race it seems to loosen up again. Does it slip back down or is it breaking? I have no idea.

Reach down and pull up on the shift release arm on the transmission with your hand. It should pull up about 1-2mm (you’ll hear kind of a click…click). If you can’t pull it up at all, then your clutch cable is too tight. If you can pull it up more than 1-2mm, your clutch cable is too loose. Best of luck.

and then you adjust accordingly? is it with that screw thing?

Yes, with that Plastic nut on the threaded cable. Clockwise to tighten, counterclockwise to loosen. Best of luck.
