A couple of months ago I started hearing rattling sounds in my engine. I searched and come to find out its from my tranny. OK. Now its very are to select gears while driving. I performed the clutch test, and it doesnt slip at all. There is a little oil leaking from it looks like the bolts under the tranny. Whats the problem?
Sounds like the synchros may have gone bad. Not good. Take it to a tranny shop and pay the 60 bills to have them look at it.
if you are in neutral and you push the clutch in does it get quieter or noisier? also is it kind of a humming noise in those select gears?
Do this simple test. Put the car in neutral and push in the clutch. Do you hear the noise? If yes then it is a non tranny related problem unless your clutch has a problem. If the noise is not there, release the clutch. Now is the noise there? If the answer is yes, your input shaft bearing in your transmission is toast. It’s a common problem with Honda transmissions.

How loud is that rattling noise? When I’m at idle I can hear very faint noise, which could be a bearing, and it does go away when I put my foot on the clutch. You can only hear it if you are listening for it, and it’s not a rattle. Should there be any noise, or is mine starting to go bad? I need a new clutch, so I guess it wouldn’t hurt to just replace that bearing at the same time.
yeah, i hear the rattling noise only when i push the clutch. When I’m at a stop light and in neutral. Sometimes i cant select gears. I have to turn the car off, put it in first the crank back up and go.
The slight “whirring” noise of the transmission is normal. But if it’s a loud “grinding” type noise or if the noise is easily heard inside the car, the bearing is going if not gone. If the noise is there when the clutch engaged, it’s definitely a clutch problem. My guess is a broken clutch disc, springs popped out or something of the like. Best of luck.
If you only hear the noise when the clutch pedal is in, then it might be your throw-out bearing. That went bad on my Civic. Does it do it everytime you press on the clutch, or just sometimes? I drove mine like that for about 10k, but mine wasn’t a grinding noise, it was a high pitched noise. Either way you should probably replace your clutch.
yeah if when your pedal is on the floor then its the throw out bearin if when its up then its a input shaft bearing prob or intermediate shaft prob.
Does it go away in 4th gear? if so then its most likely an intermediate shaft bearing prob. when you are in fourth gear in almost all cars (not sure about tegs) the tranny is in what they call a 1 to 1 gear. which means the input shaft (engine) is turning the same speed as the output shaft. anyways when you are in this 1 to 1 (4th gear) the intermediate shaft has no load on it b/c the power flow goes straight through the main shaft , hence the noise dissapearing. if you need me to explain better reply, i’m not the greatest at explaining things w/o drawings…
