clutch/transmission problem

My 91 Teg’s clutch just snapped, I believe.

The tranny seems to continue spinning even with the clutch pedal fully depressed, because it grinds if I try to put it in reverse. (I’ve tried adjusting the clutch fork. I think I hear the fork hitting the transmission housing, and it still won’t release.)

Also, if I shove it into first, the clutch will slip at medium RPMs. (This was before I adjusted it)

Basically, I’m just posting this here as a means of obtaining a quick confirmation to the following question:

Does it sound like I need a new clutch?

I am fully prepared to drop the tranny and replace the clutch.

If everyone agrees that something on the clutch assembly broke, then is there anything I need to know about replacing this clutch?

I’ve done a headgasket job before, but I’ve never done any clutch work. Any tips/pointers would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

Does it grind every time you put it in reverse? Try pushing the clutch in, shifting into 1st and THEN reverse. I find that usually prevents mine from grinding. If that works, then try adjusting your clutch to within spec, and see if your clutch still slips at mid-RPM. If it DOES still slip, then yeah, I’d definitely take it apart… and replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, and bearings. Try to get a kit with an alignment tool too.

It’s also a good opportunity to do some flywheel work – at the very least get it cut and balanced. But if you want quicker revs too, you can get it lightened (most agree that the stock flywheel can be lightened to 13lbs and still be safe), or replace it with an aluminum or chromoly wheel. But that costs big $'s…

Good luck

It won’t go into first OR reverse.

If I really bear down on it I can get it into first, but there’s no way I’m gonna drive it like that. (Can you say, “BUSTED SYNCROs.” ??)

It ALWAYS grinds if I try to put it in reverse.

It WILL NOT go into reverse no matter what I do.

Yeah… I’m going to get a kit.

I’m just wondering what the heck grenaded in there!

Is it common for clutches to fail in this manner?

mine just do some thing like this… my old one just grip at the track, I dot a new one installed (ceramic one with pressure plate and bearing) and when I press the clutch pedal, the clutch stay engaged… I must press the gaz to disengage it or like you said… busted synchro, its a lot difficult to shift! I’ll go to the shop tomorow to have this repared! I don’t know WHY it does this tought!

Sounds like a bad install job. You should get the people who installed it to fix it for you.

BTW, I think I figured out how I’m going to support the engine when the transaxle is removed from the car.

I’m going to fabricated a wooden truss to hold up the engine via chains. I have a friend who did this for a cast iron V8. You KNOW it’ll work for this little 500 lb aluminum motor.
