Can you use the same clutch from a b18a tranny ( i believe a ys1) with a b16 tranny? Just wondering cause i need a new clutch now but havent decided if in the future i will be using the same tranny or the b16 shorter geared one.
it depends on the tranny.
90-91 integra clutches will fit 89-91 jdm b16a trannies (y1, s1, j1)
92-93 clutches (from stock ys1) will fit the 92-93 jdm b16a tranny (ys1).
If your car is a 92-93 and you are getting an 89-91 b16a you’ll need to use the clutch that came with the b16, or get a 90-91 integra clutch.
if your car is a 90-91 and you are using a 92-93 b16a ys1 tranny you will need to use the clutch that came with the b16a or you will need to get a 92+ clutch (all 92+ b series clutches fit the same)
well i have a ys1 tranny already i thought b16 trannys were diff.

b16a trannies are different.
89-91 b16a trannies are either y1, s1, or j1
92-93 integra b16a trannies are ys1 (92-93 civic b16a trannies are different!).
what you need to know is that the vtec trannies are labelled exactly the same as the normal ones. The jdm b16a tranny, the usdm gsr tranny and the rs/ls/gs trannies are all labelled “ys1” But that doesn’t mean they are the same. The rs/ls/gs tranny has longer gears. The jdm b16a and usdm b17a ys1’s are short geared (have same gearing as eachother) and the jdm ys1 came with optional lsd.
So, remember, you can’t tell exactly what tranny you have just by looking to see if its a ys1, y1, j1… because they came labelled the same but with different guts.
Well, that’s kinda true. Except the J1 will always be a B16A 89-91 tranny, and so will the Y1. You only have to worry about the S1 and YS1.
Oh, BTW, any thoughts on advantages and disadvantages on the 90-91 and 92-93 clutches?
I have a B16A S1 tranny which is 89-91, and I was going to trade for a 92-93 LS tranny (mainly for turbo issues). But I also wanted to do this because I wanted to run the 92-93 clutches (which are the same for 94-01 correct?) which gives me a more diverse selection.
Do you see any disadvantages for doing this? (I need to buy a clutch right now anywayz).
Well my main copncern is i am going to buy a stage 3 clutch for my 93 ls tranny. But i might consider a diff tranny in the near future. So what other tranny’s can i use?
i thought all the 90-93 ls’s were the same cable driven trannys and the only the '94+ were hydraulic. How are the 90/91’s different from the '92/93’s?
good qestion, i heard somone else having a prob like that before too though. having a clutch for a 90-91 and needing a 92-93,

yes, you are right about the j1, y1 thing.
There are no performance advantages to either the 90-91 or 92+ clutch. The only advantage i can see to having the 92-93 tranny is that the clutch can sometimes be up to as much as $20 cheaper, and you have more clutch options (meaning that clutches from other cars will also fit your tranny).
All 92+ b series clutches are the same. For example: 92-93 ls/rs/gs, 92-93 gsr, 94+ ls/rs/gs, 94+ gsr, 94+ dohc vtec del col, and 99-01 civic si clutches are all interchangable. And in most cases they are actually the same part number.
the actual physical difference between the two different styles of clutch is just the size of the spline that fits onto the clutch disk. One is i believe 25mm and the other 26mm (don’t quote me on those numbers though). The pressure plates are actually the same. So you could use a 92-93 pressure plate on a 90-91 and vice versa.
demon666999: If you buy a clutch for your 93 LS tranny and decide to go vtec later you will have 2 options:
-92-93 jdm b16a tranny (ys1) -(some came w/ lsd)
-92-93 usdm gsr tranny (ys1)
Both of these trannies are fairly hard to find (well, harder than the j1, s1, y1 trannies).
Daver: yes, all 90-93 trannies are cable and 94+ are hydro. (honda made the switch to hydro trannies in 1992. however the teg didn’t get the hydro because it didn’t change body styles in '92 like the civic did. So, if you get a 92-93 b16a out of a jdm civic sir it will come with a hydro tranny. if you get a 92-93 b16a out of an xsi it comes with a cable tranny).
Whether it is cable or hydro does not affect the clutch that can be used. (read my above post for the actual difference in 89-91 and 92+ clutches/trannies).
ok- i currently have a 90 gs with an ACT clutch (prt# AI2-HDSS - spent $900 Can!!! did i get ripped off?) and i’m gonna do the ol jdm 89-91 b16a swap, will my expensive clutch still work with it or did i just spend 900 bucks for no reason :bawl:
it’ll work. did you read colin’s posts? he pretty much explained it all.
