Code 9, Odd Transmission Performance

Well, I’ve looked all over the place for information but nothing very specific about my issue has come up. My S3 light started coming on during a trip, and the car began shifting erratically at times (maybe 10% of the time), also routinely shifting at largely different RPMs than normal, and whenever the light is on, the car refuses to shift to 4th gear. So, I found code 9 below the dash which is the A/T speed pulser, and that’s it. The fluid looks healthy, clean and red. My question: do the symptoms match the code? If I replace the A/T pulser, will my problem be solved or will my gears fall apart anyway?

The code doesn’t seem like the end of the tranny problems to me. I’ve also been having speedometer issues for a long time, since last year when I had the VSS and cable replaced. This may be related but I don’t know how. Now the needle sticks quite a bit (roughly every 5 mph on the gauge), but generally works. I also had a ticking noise coming from behind the firewall I think, which was related to the speedo problem, and it doesn’t seem to be happening now that the A/T pulser is giving me a code.

I’m about at my wits end with this POS! I’ve spent too much money in the last year alone fixing it, and I won’t bother fixing the tranny too if it’s surely dead. Any insight is much appreciated!

Code 9 could also be for your speed sensor. i would get your distributor checked. or swap with a known good one to test.

As for your speedo cable. It just needs greased behind the cluster. be careful, and make sure you unhook it fromt he tranny BEFORE you take your cluster out and grease the cable. it will get rid of the mouse infestation behind your cluster.

Welcome to G2 Integras

So the distributor could be part of this? I’ve checked it recently and it still seems pretty new inside. Maybe I will swap it out.

Check this out. maybe you can save your self a couple of bucks.

I’m not sure if one or both of you is thinking of CEL code 9, but my code 9 is transmission code 9, which is the A/T speed pulser (not sensor). Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the code means different things depending on which system it comes out of.

I think as is appropriate for the difficulty of predicting transmission trouble, I should have titled the thread “Code 9 from Outer Space”.
