Since dropping and doing some other stuff to my teg i took out my inner fender wells. Since i have i cold air intake I figured that it would benefit from this also. So the Air filter is exposed completely, when it rains it gets completely soaked. Is this bad??? i have no bypass valve, i plan to get one today. But my biggest thing is, is there water getting into my engine due to the fact that the intake is getting soaked. Should i put back on the inner fender. Anybodys help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Justin
I would say that prolly a small amount of water does make its way to the engine. That is not the biggest problem though because i would think that a soaked filter would restrict the airflow and thats not good.
Let me explain how but it is to get water in your engine. water is impossible to compress. UNlike air where it can be almost infinitly compresseed. If water fills one container, you can’t make it fill a smaller container. So you get water up your intake to your throttle body in through your intake valves and now you have water in the compression chamber. So the piston moves up. The water now takes up all of the space between the piston (floor), the ceiling, and the walls of the combustion chamber. But the piston still wants to go up more, but it can’t cus it can’t squeeze the water any smaller. So now the piston rod gets bent up and the piston head gets screwed up, maybe you will screw up some valves or anything else. So water is a bad thing. Get the Bypass valve.
what kind of filter do you have? -if it is a paper one (like the stock ones), when it gets wet, it will come apart and get sucked into your throttle body and it would not be pretty (if you get my point…). Hope this helps…

I cant think of a way to explain it properly but the airflow the enigne is asking for is going to come from the path of least resistance- if the airflow throught the air filter has resistance, the bypass valve then becomes that path of least resistance- so it opens up- does that make sense
The INtake and filter are both AEM, so the filter is reusable. I did get the bypass valve, hopfully it’ll work for now. I think i might also get a short ram intake for the later summer months. It won’t be driven this winter ( due to body, engine, suspension work ) so i’m not worried about it then. Thanks to all who responded to this question. I appreciate your help. Hopefully i’ll see some of you next spring at some shows. Gonna try and make as many out of state shows as possible. Definately gonna be at the NOPI Nats next year.
I live in Oregon, and it rains alot here, should i not get a cold air intake- I was told not too.
If so i heard a good intake were the OBX’s but couldn’t find any on ebay, still unsure what kind of intake I want, make a nice sound- would be nice for some performance, but im not going to be racing on the tarck. thxs.
would this be a good way to go?
just so many diff intakes, no brand- I don’t see any difference. but since alot of rain in oregon, don’t want paper filter right? so, should this one be a good one you guys think? cool sound (no bad sounds?), somewhat performance
I also want an intake that me an amature could easily install, or maybe a little harder that would not have to have professionaly installed. cause i have a neighbor thats good w/ cars
I would think that it is likely that the air coming through the soaked filter would cause some of the moisture to enter the engine. It seems to me that the possibilties of damage from the moisture would outweigh the benefits of the colder air. Also, I tend to agree that a wet filter would reduce the airflow and therefore the benefit of installing the CAI.
hey guys up here in canada the snow is thowing and puddles galore but i just couldn’t wait to install my AEM CAI big difference onlt thing i gotta do now is watch out for the puddles. I have the inner wall in and i’m thinking of making a sheild that goes around the intake filter it self this way i’ll insure i’ll have no water where the filter sit’s. As for filters don’t get the reactive or apc ones their not reusable buy the K&N filters b/c they are reusable and work better
OMG u guys, when you buy your CAI either buy a two-piece or have a local speed shop cut it and spend liek $2.00 on the rubber connectors, run CAI when its dry, then if it rains, pop the hood, take off the extension, and toss it in your trunk.
Or you could just do the lazy-mans way (aka. me) and run short ram all winter until the damn rain stops falling, then once its nice and sunny here in the bay area CA, THEN run CAI.
IMO, if its anywhere near wet, don’t run CAI, run short ram, its just smarter.
i have a airflow by import racing for my 93 integra . will the aem bypass valve to prevent water into engine work with this? and this airflow came off a 91 with a 91 bumper i have a 93 bumper. is that fine?
Thread been dead for 4 so years lol…Yes that what it is made for but it wont prevent straight puddles. All i am saying is DONT risk it… Next time search its cover.
