I was looking at the possiblity of getting a carbon fiber hood but I didnt want the 2 tone look. Then I came across a company on ebay that makes CF hoods and for an extra 120 you can add a color to the carbon.

is this just like a color they add before they put the clear on or is there actually colored carbon fiber?
I google image searched it and found some red hoods and it looks good. heres a pic pics.
I think this would be a good alternitive from painting over the carbon fiber.
I’ve seen it in red, yellow and blue. Red looks the best IMO. Half of the carbon weave is actually that color, AFAIK.
has any1 heard of the company on that link
It is not carbon fiber. It is hybrid carbon/dyed kevlar.
does it serve the same purpose… lightweight and strong?
Just my 2 cents, so take it for what you will.
I’d email them and ask if they use an Epoxy or a Polyester resin. Polyester is a VERY cheap way to work. The color isn’t as pure and when something hits it, it tends to spider web as apposed to epoxy that only cracks under maximum stress.
The pics on ebay don’t really appear as “cloudy” as polyester but it would be good to check first.
Also, ask how many layers of carbon fiber they use. It looks like they have a fiberglass base and then carbon fiber on top of it…that too is bad. It also means they are charging WAY to much.
thanks for the tips… i already sent them one email and i’ll be sure to send another
I agree with CRE8HVK. Most of the time, they are selling a fiberglass hood with just one layer of CF/Kevlar on top so it “looks” like a CF hood. A true CF hood weighs only approx 3-4lbs. I only know of one person that has a true CF hood. All this fiberglass hoods with a layer of CF are way overpriced.
theres a guy on here that has a Red weave CF hood. His is all CF tho. His name is J ROD. He was willing to make a trade, if you buy him a seibon CF hood he will give you his Red weaved cf hood.
Is it all CF? I dont think so, those hoods are approx $600 so I dont see him trading for a lower grade Seibon hood. Just because the skeleton is CF doesnt mean the whole hood is CF. It still can be a fiberglass hood. If it is a real deal CF hood, then it would be a steal! I still dont think its full CF.
Doesnt ViS have a fiberglass base?
Yeah, I think you have that backwards, most CF hoods have a fiberglass base with a CF top.
Fastback, If youre referring to me, I dont have it backwards. Yes, most CF hoods are CF on top, and fiberglass on bottom including the skeleton (like I stated before), but VIS and other companies are making “full CF” hoods which have a fiberglass base, CF on top, and a CF skeleton.
VIS does not make a true full CF hood. If they do, I have NEVER seen or heard of one. I know Spoon used to make one, and there is only one person I know of that has it. It is extremely light and was quite expensive.
ComptonsF1NEST, yes they do. They are just fiberglass hoods with a single layer of CF on top. Its not a real CF hood. Dont get me wrong, it is lighter than a stock hood, but not by much. A true CF hood is approx 3-4lbs.
Sounded like you were saying it was all fiberglass with a CF frame.
