cometic vs oem

I’m finishing up my build right now and im trying to decide a head gasket to go with, oem would be my first choice but im concerned about compression. I have p30 pistons with a .50 overbore, when I do the all the calculations with the head being shaved it should yeild somewehre between 11-11.5:1 compression. now for the questions:

  1. Can I run an OEM gasket with a .50 overbore?

  2. Can the OEM gasket hold up to 11.5:1 compression?

  3. Just want to hear some opinions on OEM vs. Cometic head gaskets

Thanks for your help!!!

i was pricing head gaskets for my B16 because i need a new one…
i decided to go with the Buddy Club .05mm head gasket because its only $2 more than the OEM…regardless if the OEM one can hold, for $2 more i can get an aftermarket/performance one…

dont know if that’ll help you with any decision making but just thought i drop my .01 cent…

There’s nothing wrong with an OEM with a 81.5mm bore. Cometic is good, but even those break. it’s not worth the trouble sometimes if you can get away with OEM. I say stick with OEM, if not then check out GE as they bore the OEM to whatever Bore you have.

I talked to my local dealer and the parts guy said the OEM gasket will fit the overbore just fine and that it won’t have any problems with the jump in compression, he said he’s been running 11.5:1 in his Ls powered hatch for two years now on an OEM gasket and hasn’t had a problem yet. OEM gasket here i come.

Very Good choice IMO!
