Like some others have encountered on this thread, I have recently had an overheating problem. I know this so far:
When I turn on my a/c, the passenger side fan turns on.
No matter what I do, the driver’s side fan will not turn on.
So, how to I test that fan motor exactly (I am a mechanical novice!)? I believe that the fan motor may need to be replaced. Any idea how much a replacement may be?
Also, I did check the fuses (#12 and #20), but both were okay.
If it is a relay problem:
The relay behind the battery controls what? The Haynes manual states that this is the cooling fan relay location (page 3-5, figure 4.7a). The relay to the left of the radiator (as you sit in the driver’s seat) Haynes says is the condensor cooling fan relay (page 3-5, figure 4.7b).
It appears that the relay is associated with the opposite fan, i.e. the relay near the actual condensor operates the fan on the passenger side. Is this correct? And vice versa. The relay near the battery controls the fan on the driver’s side.
Yesterday, the temperature gauge started to go to the extreme when I had my a/c on and sitting in traffic. It backed off to the middle range when driving on the freeway.
Anybody that can help with the layout of the fans/motors, diagnosis, etc.? It would be greatly appreciated.
Similar to another thread titled “one fan running”:
Which is the a/c fan and which is the radiator/cooling fan? There seems to be quite a lot of confusion as to this. My car is a stock 1990 Integra GS. The Haynes book I have isn’t exactly clear on this either.
What is the best way to disconnect the green plug for the condensor fan motor, from above or from down below?
How about the condensor relay: do I just unbolt it then take it apart to test with leads?
I found the helms information on blackteg’s website to be far superior in helping comprehend the responses on this forum (that is compared to the haynes manual)!
you can find the Helsmiilnk (online scanned copy) in the Archives… or search for it. Someone was VERY kind and posted it up on a separate website… VERY NICE PERSON
