I’m considering buying a quaife lsd and installing it prior to doing my auto/manual swap, since it’ll be easier to do now than mount the tranny and then later remove it again to install one in the future. The main things I’m wondering are:
First, what do I need to do the install? More specifically, are there any parts that I need to order from honda that need to be replaced or should probably be replaced (other than the gaskets and seals associated with taking the tranny apart)? It’s going in what I think is a 92-93 USDM YS1, and I’m going to be ordering a bunch of parts for the swap and other things and I’ll put them all on the same order to save money on shipping.
Second, is it worth it? I know it’s kinda personal preference, but I’m a little concerned I won’t feel much if any difference from it. I have a fair amount of work done to the suspension already, and may try auto-x and a bit of drag racing in the future (if I can find places for it around here). I do enjoy cornering and generally spirited driving if the conditions are right, but would the quaife be almost overkill for me if I’m not on a track? Or is it something that can be enjoyed on the street too?
Thanks!

i would email dan (g2guru). he has personally done this install himself, so he would know everything you need.

Hey spikius,
First thing you need to know is they are not LSD’s they are ATB’s. The only things you need to purchase are the proper thrust washer shim for the width difference of the Quaife and the stock differential. This can only be determined after you have the Quaife differential, the gearbox apart and have done a partial re assembly. I also recommend you replace the two carrier bearings on the differential, they are expensive but why tear the gearbox apart again or risk damaging the Quaife for a couple $40.00 items. Some 0.051 to 0.152 Plasticgage and gear box oil. I installed mine 4 years ago, best upgrade I ever did, receives punishment every weekend spring through fall under competition conditions, no failures and don’t expect to have any, worth every penny.
Spikius,
at the SEMA Auto Salon last month in Long Beach, Quaife had a booth there. They had a show price of $750 (of course I bought one 2 months prior at the retail price…doh!) So, basically, if you don’t have another connection and can find out from Quaife when their next show appearance is (if it is near you or a friend) it could save you a little money.
I also asked them about what oil should go in the tranny with the Quiafe and they told me Honda MTF just like stock trannies.
HTH
Ok, cool! Thanks for all the replies! Ya, I was aware that they are actually ATB’s not LSD’s, I just didn’t think to say that, since most people seem to refer to them as LSD’s. Doh
sorry As for price, I was going to buy one from the groupbuy on groupbuycenter.com for $805 shipped, which sounds like a decent deal to me, although $750 is cheaper, but I’m not sure I’ll have time to wait for quaife to be at another show (dying to get my auto/manual swap done, and don’t want to wait too long to get all the parts), and I’m in RI, and there don’t tend to be a whole lot of car/product shows around here. I think I will order one. You guys definitely seem to like them, and they do sound like they are worth it. Thanks for all the info! Much appreciated!
