Hey guys, I recently bought another 93 integra. Seeing that I had no knowledge of previous maintenance and the valves were pretty noisy I decided to replace the timing belt and do a valve adjustment to get it running as well as possible. I ordered a new oem timing belt and valve cover gasket and picked up a used crank pulley because for some reason the previous owner installed a pulley from a different honda in place of the oem pulley. Taking everything apart went smoothly until I removed the crank pulley. When I did I found the previous owner also used a piece of nail in place of the oem pulley key. To my horror, the piece of nail jammed in between the crankshaft and the pulley, shearing a piece at the tip of the crankshaft off. I took some pics to illustrate the problem.
Stock pulley vs previous pulley
And just for kicks, oem key vs nail fragment
So basically I’m looking for advice on the best way to fix this short of replacing the crankshaft. I have a few ideas but would like to hear what you guys would suggest. Thanks in advance!
The proper way of fixing it would be to weld it and sand it down.
Could always try JB Weld, but I really wouldn’t trust that on a crankshaft.
not too sure if you want to try and repair that. it may cause the shaft to be out of balance. just assuming
Thanks for your input guys! Much appreciated. Everything was going smoothly until I hit that snag. My idea was also to weld it to build it up and grind/sand it back to shape. I am definitely worried about balance but without knowing the history on the car I have no idea how long its been like this. I’ve seen some half-assed shit before but that nail just tops it all.
yea that’s pretty messed up stuff. don’t take my word about the balance or anything. like i said, just assuming. but look into that though
Heh, I meant have a machine shop do it… because as welfare said, balance will be key.
Call around and see if any machine shops can help you out.
I have a feeling if I ask a machinist to do the work they’re going to be very hesitant and more than likely won’t want to do it. I’m going to make some calls and get some input. More than likely though I’ll try to do it myself and hunt for a replacement motor as soon as possible.
I also forgot to ask, on the crank pulley there I a single groove and a grouping of three grooves. Which one am I supposed to be lining up with the mark on the cover for tdc? My manual says the groove should be painted white but if it was painted before its not now. If memory serves me though its the single groove right? Not the middle one of the other three?
single groove on its own is tdc, yes. other 3 are 14,16 and 18*btdc
