Crossovers or Highpass filters

OK basically I want to be able to turn my sub up while avoiding distortion from my mids and highs. Cause once I start turning it up all the way they start distorting because the the bass. I want my sub to take care of all the low end to avoid this distortion. I have been reading about highpass filters and crossovers to cancel out the lower frequencies and decided to buy some with the little knowledge I had lol. Annnyway I got 2 sets, a pair of 3way Kenwood passive crossovers and a set of patriot 2 way crossovers.

So I hooked them up and tried it out and they sound like shit now. Is this because these crossovers are just canceling out to much? The sounded very dull and distorted. IDK I tried to look for as much info online as I could but IDK what im looking for exactly. Well needless to say I took the crossovers out and hooked it all back up the old way and sounds much better now (waste of 25$ though). Anyone have some knowledgeable advice for me ahaha. Thanks

A discription of your system, [makes and models] would help.:whisper: 94

Ill get the models of everything tomorrow cause I g2g work lol.

Are you’re highs amped? Do you not have digital crossovers on the amp or headunit?

Well basically as of now I have

-2 Polk EX602a in the front
-2 Infinity Reference 6002i in the back
-And my head unit is A Pioneer DEH-1300 (Will be swapping it out with a 2300 today)

The 2 pairs of X-overs I have are

-The Patriot Series 2way passive X-over network, 100 watts 4ohm
-Kenwood High performance passive X-over network

The deck right now (the 1300) allows me to up the low, mid, or highs. But like I said I can never get sufficient bass without the mids and highs distorting and it will probably only get worse once I put in the DEH-2300 as it’s 55 watts instead of 45.

Sounds good Im gonna give them a try.

I have to agree with jaysteven, because you are using HUs internal amp, you have no choice, [if HU does not have HP filter] to use a passive x-over, however You can pick up non polarized capacitors at your local electronics supply store, maybe even online, for about $2 each look for 320mF, [about 125Hz] - 450mF, [about 90Hz] or someplace in between 320-450, You can fins a passive x-over chart at… http://www.the12volt.com/ under car audio/miscellaneous.

Keep in mind a cap is only a 1st order 6dB high-pass x-over, you may want to got to a 2nd (12dB) or 3rd (18dB)order x-over.:hmm:94
