May be a dumb idea but… how long could i drive on a ripped driverside cv boot. I’m struggling with all my payments and can’t afford to spend money on that. And i need to drive my car about 120 km. a day. Fu(k i should always keep some cash for things like this.
Technically, You can probably drive for years (unless you Do alot of hard driving).
The issue is that unless you change it soon, You will end up changing the entire axle becasue the CV Joint will wear out and start clicking due to lack of lubrication and dirt contamination in the CV Joint.
you will know when the Joint starts to wear out…
Click…Click…click every time you turn. :argh:
Yup Yup… n’ then don’t even bother replacing the JOINT… just the whole CV Shaft… hmm… each side… yer lookin around… 150 Canadian for parts…orrrrrrr… about 20-30 bux for the cv boot… n’ save the joint? usually when the cv boot goes… by the time you realize it… too much damage has been done to the joint… so if i were you… i’d just replace the whole shaft when ya get the coin… n’ try not to do any crazy high speed turns for a while… (besides…you shouldnt be doin that stuff anyways… your on a budget… rubber aint cheap… LoL)
You should be able to get a reman driveshaft from Lordco (after core, minus discount) for $85 CDN or so, not too bad … it’s an easy install too, I have a teg tip I am submitting on this soon, lemme know if you want it.
I just did my passenger side tonight in 30 mins hehe.
As for the cracked boot, as soon as all the grease is gone (which sounds like it will be fairly soon if you drive alot), it will start to click … then you should fix it asap. Do NOT repack the boot, replace the entire axle … at least then you are covered by warranty.
Yuep just easier to replace the whole axle, down here at autozone, if u give them your core after replacing it with theres u get like 60 bucks back, so total u pay is like 60 after getting back 60 or so, plus the axles here have a life time warrenty, so i another breaks just get another, and give htem back the other core
Sweet!! Nice to hear that i’m not gonna kill myself by losing a wheel or something. I’m going to see if i can put it away for the winter this year and maybe do some upgrades.
redlineintegra: Sure man i’d love a teg tip on how to do the work myself. Any chance i get to learn something, i’m all over it.
Thanks again.
I drove on a ripped driver’s side outer CV boot for 2 months. Never started clicking.
It takes me about 4 hours to do an axle install because everything always goes wrong.
not a good idea to keep drivng on torn boots but i guess if you have to then untill they start to make a clunking sound then that means it’s time to replace the axle. more $$$. LOL
this is for you mechanics and honda/acura techs:
did you guys know there’s a company in california that made a special tool where you dont have to pull the axle off just to change the inner and outer cv boot? i’m not talking bout those cheesy snapped on boot(quick fix) from your local parts store but the whole cv boot? if you do, what do you think about it?
